Treasurer’s Report: Jenni Mahute presented the budget as of January 2011. The PTO raised over $10,000 from cookie dough sales. Pizza and Basketball made $152 and even Spirit Clothing sales made a small profit.

Presentation: Mary Beth Irvin, SCASD Curriculum Development, spoke about the elementary Math Pilot programs. There are 3 programs being piloted: Investigations 2, Investigations Plus Envision, and Math Expressions. A few teachers at each school are trying their assigned pilot program and keeping data. More information can be found at : Academics: Math K-6.

Division Highlights:

Junior Primary: Jen Conklin reported that some of the junior primary programs before winter break included a presentation on sight loss, muscles & bones, and a presentation by Jen Brauser of Target Pharmacy on safe medicine use. On Monday, the classes will be seeing Click, Clack, Moo on the Penn State campus.

Primary: Dottie Zembower thanked the PTO for Click Clack Moo. The Primary grades are beginning a new unit called “Then & Now,” and will be learning about State College, family history, etc.

Intermediate: Michele Allen reported that the intermediate grades will be doing catapult making while studying simple machines, visiting Wegmans for the Nutrition unit, and will be using all $950 of their funds for Penns Cave field trip at the end of May.

A Birthday Cake kit drive is starting next week; students will be asked to bring in icing and cake mix to donate to the food bank.

Upper Intermediate: Linda Andrews reported that the Arts & Crafts & Caring Fair held before break was a success; the 5th graders did a good job of having enough goods for sale at a reasonable price; many kids donated all of their proceeds to the charity of their choice. The fair brought in over 1000 lbs. of food to be donated to the Food Bank.

Recent field trip was a Geology trip to the Mineral Science building on the Penn State campus. The Animal Kingdom Unit is beginning now; kids will be learning a lot about invertebrates and bugs. Journeys: Westward-Ho is also about to begin, and band & orchestra have begun.

PTO Housekeeping: Michelle Cook reported that cookie dough sale was so successful that the PTO will not be doing any more fundraising this year, aside from Spring Madness in March. She proposed that the PTO uses some of its extra funds to purchase a new sound system for each school; something higher quality, compact & portable. The PTO will be sending emails to teachers to see what they might want for their classroom that the PTO can provide, including the art teacher, the music teacher, and the gym teacher.

Kelly Clark and Jen Brauser will be handling ticket sales for Spring Madness, and Kim Snyder will be providing the food, which will be served in the cafeteria this year. Spring Madness takes place on March 18, and volunteers are needed to help with set up.

Barnes & Noble Fundraiser: Mardi Frye reported that we earned $783.30 from in-store sales at our fundraiser. This money went directly to the school district rather than to the PTO because we had to use their tax non-exempt number.

Visiting Author: Alice Shertle will be visiting on April 12.

Box Tops: Karen Bryan reported that forms will be going out in the Friday folders for the spring Box Tops drive; collection date is February 22. There will be prizes given randomly to kids from each grade who turn in box tops. We received a check for $286 from the Fall drive.

Scholastic: Rich Santillo reported that Lemont received $643 and Houserville received $716 in Scholastic dollars from the fall book fair. Books were donated to both libraries. We will not be having another book fair during International Fun Night, as was previously discussed as a possibility.

International Fun Night: Flyers went out last week; Nicole Franklin will be going in to talk to classes and will work with Michele Allen to set up a schedule.

Jenni Mahute moved to adjourn the meeting, Cristina Houtz seconded, and the meeting was adjourned at 8:00 pm. Next meeting is scheduled for February 16, 2011.

Respectfully submitted,

Karen Walker, Recording Secretary
