Stem Summer AdventureThe STEM Summer Adventure (SSA) is designed to increase student social engagement in the university by creating a community of peers and instructors with whom the students have familiarity and relationship. Literature has suggested that a strong lever to improve student retention is student engagement, both informal (peer interactions) and formal (faculty/staff interactions). The primary goal of the SSA is to utilize this best practice to increase student engagement thus improving retention. The STEM Summer Adventure is a 5-day extended field program happening the week before school starts. The summer adventure is a math-science learning experience that uses outdoor-based activities as a fun laboratory for learning.SSA participants are required to enroll in the one-credit University 197 seminar for the fall semester. The class meets weekly and feature guest speakers, lab tours, and hands on learning activities. The goals of the SSA are:?To develop a social community of learners such that the students are engaged socially in the campus? ?To give the students a basic set of student success skills,?To have the students feel connected to faculty on campus.?To familiarize the student with research opportunities, and employment opportunities within their departments.Long-term assessment of this program will be done using retention and completion data. Short-term assessment was done by using NSSE-like questions and comparing the results to the entire BSU student population. ................
