1. Students are to research the holiday traditions of the country of their choice, as approved by the teacher.
2. Information that must be included:
• The holiday celebrated this time of year and dates of its celebration – in most countries it will be Christmas (ex: Christmas, December 25)
• The fictional character of the holiday, if there is one, and its description (ex: Santa Clause – a jolly old man with a white beard, dressed all in red, visits homes on Christmas eve to deliver gifts, lives at the North Pole with his elves)
• The reason for this celebration (ex: to celebrate Jesus’ birth)
• Special traditions (ex: Christmas tree, stockings, kissing under the mistletoe)
• Food associated with the holiday (ex: Christmas cookies, gingerbread, candy canes)
• Any other interesting facts about the holiday – at least 3 (ex: celebrating Christmas on December 25th began in 440 AD)
3. When making your box, you can simply use the one that I am providing you with, or you can make your own, larger box using the same pattern.
4. You may choose to display this information on your box however you wish. Be neat, colorful, and creative!
5. These will be due on Friday, December 16. You will then be teaching the class about your country’s holiday traditions using your box.
6. For bonus, you may also do one or more of the following:
• Bring in a food associated with your country’s holiday for the class to enjoy
• Wear a traditional Christmas outfit as would be seen in your country
• Dress up like the fictional character of your holiday
• Create a diorama of a scene depicting your country’s holiday
• Plan an activity done by children relating to your holiday to do with the class
7. This is meant to be a FUN activity for you, which is why it will not be graded! The only grade you will receive is that of participation – 10 points for simply bringing in the box and bonus points if you choose any of the bonus items. If you are struggling to find information, let me know and I will provide you with some possible books and websites to use. HAVE FUN!
