Group Discussion: Banking and Dining in the US

You will be introduced to two different banks during orientation as well as another sponsoring bank whose information is in your packet. These are not the only two banks in Lawrence, and you can choose between any bank that is available to you, or no bank at all (not recommended). In the ISSS student handbook, page 14, you will find information on banking.

Go over the information on banking; answer general questions about banking. If they have questions about individual banks, they should ask that bank. However, you may say that commerce is the only bank on campus.

Hand out sample checks and explain what goes where on the check. Remind students about credit cards and the possibility of credit card debt. It is difficult for an international student to get a credit card.

General Restaurant Etiquitte

← Don’t walk through the drive through (usually only fast food restaurants)

← In minimum-service restaurants, you may need to “bus” your own table (clean up trash/dishes). Look for a trash can as an indicator.

← If there’s a host(ess) at the front, they will seat you. For some restaurants, you may have to wait.

← If there are many people, you may be able to split the bill. Ask you waiter if you wish to do this.

Explanation of tipping (use your own words, this is just a guideline)

← Tipping, also known as “gratuity”, is a common part of US culture

← Service employees (bar & waiting staff) make $3/hour on average-so they depend on tips a lot

← Tipping in the US is generally limited to food, drinks, personal service, transportation and lodging

← However, it is considered rude for a service worker to ask for a tip.

← If you don’t know whether or not to tip, you should tip

Instances of tipping

← Bartenders – usually 50 cents or $1 for a mixed drink

← Food delivery – usually, delivery fee is added to the cost of food, but still customary to tip

← Fast food – tipping is not expected

← Buffets (self-serve restaurants) – if staff brings drinks or clears off dishes, 50 cents per person in your group is acceptable

← Full-service restaurants – 15% is average, but you can adjust based on quality of service

← Personal services (barbers, salons, massages) – 10% is standard, but adjust based on quality

← Baggage handlers (in airports and hotels) – tip $1 per piece of luggage he or she handles

← Taxi or Pickup service – 5% to 10%, also $1 per luggage if the driver assists you

← Housekeeping and Hotel staff – varies based on quality of hotel.

Activity

← Quiz students on what they have learned

← Role-play or give examples of situations where tipping may be necessary

← Ask whether or not you should tip, and if so, how much.

Group Discussion: Transportation

The “T”

Getting on the Bus

Each bus is equipped with two destination signs, which identify the route number and the destination of the bus (for example: 1 Prairie Pk).

Bus stops for the Lawrence Transit System are identified with this sign. Passengers may board or exit a vehicle at any bus stop sign. Bus is free with your KUID card and $1 without.

Getting off the Bus

Indicate to your driver when you wish to get off the bus by pulling the bell cord above the windows prior to your destination stop. Remain seated until the bus has stopped. You can exit in the front or the back. After you exit, stand to the side of the road or on the sidewalk until the bus has pulled away. For your safety, do not cross in front of the bus.

Transfers

If your trip requires the use of more than one route to complete a one-way trip, ask your driver for a free transfer when you pay your fare. A transfer is valid up to two hours on any bus, except the route on which it was issued.

Bikes

All fixed-route buses are equipped with a bike rack on the front of the bus. Each rack can fit two bikes and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

KU on Wheels

The KU bus is free with your KUID card and $1 without. Procedures for riding are the same as the “T”. Be sure to use the KU on Wheels map. Don’t confuse it with the “T.”

Riding a Bike

Cyclists are expected to follow the same rules as cars: stop for pedestrians, stop signs, and stop lights; have a headlight at night and a rear reflector; do not ride on the sidewalk. Also, cyclists must stay to the right of the road, wear a helmet and ride single-file. You can register bike for a small fee at the county courthouse so it is easier to find if stolen. More information in ISSS Handbook.

Driving a Car

You must have a drivers’ license to drive any motorized vehicle (including mopeds and motorcycles). Call 785-272-1961 for information. You must also have liability insurance (not covered by KU’s insurance) as a minimum legal requirement. Buying a car is very complicated. You can compare, and even bargain, for automotive prices. You must purchase license plates from the Douglas County Courthouse or in the country where you reside. Don’t forget regular maintenance. If you have an accident, get other driver’s insurance, full name, and License plate number. You will also have to pay property tax, registration and renewal. More information in ISSS handbook.

Lawrence Taxi

You may call a taxi for a more convenient, but expensive form of transportation. Check the phone listings for phone numbers and prices.

Thursday (4:30pm) REMINDERS

Everyone living in Oliver MUST be moved out by 10:00 AM on Friday. You can move out as early as 7:00 pm tonight. Be sure to turn in your key and linens. There is a $50 charge if you do not turn in these items.

Dinner: Night on the Town. Bring your own money. Go anywhere you want downtown.

Transportation: Bus will pick up outside the Union front entrance and make a continuous loop from Oliver to 9th and Massachusetts (US Bank). Rides end at 7:30. If you wish to stay longer, you must arrange for your own transportation back.

Tomorrow’s Schedule: AEC exam at 7:50. Be on time. No transportation provided. Late ISSS check-in at 1:30. Math placement at 2 pm (sign up in UAC). Forum for Success. Pizza party Co-sponsored by the Alumni Center in the Kansas Union ballroom.
