BACKGROUND INFORMATION;

CHRISC International is a large youth organization operating in four countries in the region of East Africa, namely Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. CHRISC works in cooperation with local communities, schools and organizations to provide sporting opportunities for youths in both rural and urban setting. The sports activities are connected to a strong development focus, based on leadership capacity building, health and awareness programs and social projects.

CHRISC International was established in Kenya in 2003 as a sports and development organization, and registered under the Non Governmental Organizations act in 2005 as Youth Sports Contact – Kenya. The organization develops youth from both urban and rural settings and currently the its established in 3 areas in Kenya namely; Nairobi, Eldoret and Voi with more than 11,475 youth participating in our programs.

Vision:

Transformed and actively engaged youth for society development

Mission

Enhancing youth potential through sports

Rationale.

Sport is a language that knows no boundaries, cultures, religion, race, status, age etc. It’s used to bring together people of all walks of life and thus provide a platform where important development agenda can be dealt with. However many youth face extraordinary barriers to healthy, physical and emotional development as a result of some being left out in the day to day community awareness and sensitization programs, trainings on capacity development, nation building programs and access to leadership opportunities.

The Sports and leadership Camp is geared towards promoting education in a non – formal way, and facilitates knowledge needed for the youth to actively participate in community and nation building programs as well as personal development and awareness. As the theme of the camp is play, joy and learn the youthful leaders will undergo a 3 day comprehensive and all inclusive programs tailor made to impact the youth in different ways including healthy, physical and emotional lifestyle, increased knowledge and skills in leadership, youth rights and life skills including HIV/AIDS and environment.

The camp will also provide an effective forum for interaction and mutual co – existence which will help in fostering positive and peaceful relations between different communities, young generation and understanding of diverse cultures that will be presented in the camp.

The overall aim is to provide opportunities where young people will be trained, access information and interact with fellow peers in order to increase knowledge and understanding of key social challenges they face on their daily interactions. The camp attracts participants nationally from Nairobi, Voi, Eldoret and other parts of the country as well as East Africa region as a way of promoting bridge building between young people, communities and nation building.

The focus will be on the following;

1. Sports, Leadership and volunteering.

Sport has a unique power to attract, mobilize and inspire. By its very nature, sport is about participation. It is about inclusion and citizenship. It stands for human values such as respect for the opponent, acceptance of binding rules, teamwork and fairness. It’s through the unique power of sport that we develop strong leaders and volunteers within our society.

The camp will be organized in a way that youth will benefit from a range of sports opportunities e.g. Athletics, football, volleyball, indoor games, teambuilding and fun games. Apart from sports the youth will also take part in leadership trainings, seminars and discussion forums.

2. Sexual and gender based violence (SGBV)

We expect to achieve the following on SGBV;

a. Appreciation of the gender differences and enhanced inter gender respect;

b. Reduction of traditional/cultural norms that aggravate SGBV;

c. More cases reported, justice pursued and received for survivors:

d. Increased awareness among the youth about their role in prevention of SGBV

e. Well informed leaders on SGBV

3. Youth rights and Child protection.

The systems in Kenya provide limited information about youth and children rights and mostly this information is inaccessible to them. We purpose to integrate this in our trainings in the camp as part of raising informative and active youth for national development.

4. Peace building Conflict resolution

It’s an election time in Kenya and we want to use this platform to create awareness on peaceful coexistence between different communities in Kenya and influence a positive thinking and attitude in our country. During the last elections most of the youth were used to fight and kill each other, we want to inform the youth on their rights as well as influencing them to play a key role within their communities on peaceful elections in 2013.

5. Community Managed Micro Finance (CMMF)

Over the years CHRISC Kenya has been experiencing a huge volunteer turnover annually, this is mostly attributed to lack of sustainable livelihood strategies within themselves and their communities. Community Managed Microfinance (CMMF) is expected to be a good intervention for CHRISC to meet this challenge and work on building more sustainable communities in Voi, Nairobi and Eldoret. The following anticipated expectations;

• Empowered youth and women who can meaningfully participate in decisions making on issues that affect their lives and freely participate in development activities of their respective households

• Best practices for individual and community empowerment through CMMFs and IGAs establishment documented and shared to inform planning and scale up.

• Strengthened institutional and community capacity to mobilize, support and sustain CMMFs among poor marginalized people.

• Improved culture of saving and hardworking among poor people and accumulation of assets as the result of the CMMF methodology

6. Christian Values

We want to bring up youthful leaders who are God fearing. All the leaders will be engaged in devotion and biblical sessions.
