Wilderness Festival Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Wilderness Act
Family fun event with games, entertainment, and giant birthday cake
Phoenix, AZ – Hundreds of citizens and visitors of all ages turned out to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Wilderness Act today with food, games and live entertainment-- complete with a giant tree shaped cake. The event was one of hundreds taking place across the country throughout 2014 to recognize the continuing benefits of America's wilderness legacy.
“In 1964, the Wilderness Act was passed protecting just over 9 million acres. This year as we celebrate its 50th birthday, more than 100 million acres of wilderness have been preserved,” said 7th District Congressman Ed Pastor. "As a result, families have more opportunities to get outside, communities' water and air is cleaner and a bit of nature has been saved for future generations to enjoy."
For five decades, the Wilderness Act has protected many of America’s greatest and most breathtaking lands, including areas like the Cabeza Prieta and Apache Creek Wilderness areas in Arizona. These lands filter air and water, provide habitat for wildlife, store carbon pollution and control floods, among other benefits. They also contribute to the multi-billion dollar outdoor recreation economy.
“People come from near and far to experience the wild beauty of Arizona," said Ellen Day, vice president of Mesa Airlines and a Phoenix native. "Our protected wild places help support our economy and our quality of life."
“The event really inspired me to take my children and go explore some of the wilderness areas I didn't even know we had," said John Doe, who brought his two daughters to the celebration. "These places are such wonderful resources, and they belong to us all as Americans."
Celebration festivities will continue next week with the premier of the Arizona Wilderness video and photo exhibition at a Wilderness 50th reception. The reception will take place at the Westin Hotel on January 30, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Marvel Reception Hall. Contact Chad Wordler for more information, chad.wordler@.
