DURAN YOUTH WRESTLING CLUB

ABOUT US… We are a self-supporting, non-profit organization run by volunteer parents and coaches. The club was created to give boys/girls ages 4-14 (not in high school) the chance to learn the fundamentals of wrestling before they compete at the middle school and high school levels. We are not funded by the school district but are allowed to use these excellent facilities. The Duran Youth Wrestling Club is a member of the Pikes Peak Wrestling League. The team has set very high standards for itself. We practice with intensity and have a strong work ethic. The team is very dedicated, exudes desire to learn, and is determined to become a strong wrestling club. This mindset has carried over to our goal-oriented approach. Our club emphasizes that a Duran wrestler be a student first, and wrestler second. We are a proud organization that strives for excellence and is always recruiting young ambitious athletes (boy or girl) from the surrounding area that might enjoy experiencing quality competition and the spirit of sportsmanship. We strive to develop winning attitudes in our wrestlers which fosters the environment were champions are born. For those interested, you're welcome to visit our practice, and let's wrestle!!! For further information, contact Head coach David Duran at (719) 684-6130.

MEMBERSHIP FEE

There is an $80 fee to join the club, the club will provide a club t-shirt. Additional siblings will be $60. Entry fees for each tournament are usually $15-$20. Please have registration form and fee on first day of practice. NO REFUNDS!

EQUIPMENT

All wrestlers will need wrestling shoes or gym shoes that are not worn outside. All wrestlers will also need a headgear, and singlet. Sweat pants or gym shorts and a t-shirt are fine for practice. Large and loose fitting clothing should not be worn to practice, and all jewelry must be removed.

PRACTICE

Practice Starts October 14th 2010. Practices will be held on Monday and Thursday from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. for all ages, at the James Erwin Charter School located at 5525 Astrozon Blvd. Colorado Springs, CO 80916. If bad weather cancels school that day, there will be no practice that evening. Wrestling is a tough sport! If your son/daughter plans on competing on the weekends, he needs to be at practice during the week.

COMPETITION

The kids are grouped according to age & weight at the tournaments. The majority of the tournaments are held on Saturdays and some Sundays. We realize this conflicts with church activities, but that is the only day some clubs can secure facilities. You do not have to attend every tournament on the schedule. There is a tentative tournament schedule on the Pikes Peak Wrestling League website.

Dear Parents

The Duran Youth Wrestling Club would like to thank you for joining our club. We are asking you to take the time to read about our club’s rules and guidelines:

1) The Duran Youth Wrestling Club is run by volunteers. We need parent volunteers in coaching, tournament help, rolling mats out, mopping and rolling up the mats after practice. If you have coaching experience and would like to help please contact the Head Coach. We want parents on the mat!

2) Parents. Do Not Drop Your Child(ren) off and leave. This is a sport that they can be injured at. If

your child is misbehaving on the mat you need to address the issue or we will ask them to leave. Occasionally we finish up early and if you are not there then someone from the club must stay and wait for you.

3) Sportsmanship. We expect all of our coaches, wrestlers and parents to represent the Duran Youth Wrestling Club with the utmost level of sportsmanship. We will not tolerate any coach or wrestler refusing to shake hands with his/her opponent, throwing headgear or use foul language. Parents are also reminded to set examples for the wrestlers. Again, any parent found displaying poor sportsmanship is subject to probation or their child could be dismissed from the club. We sincerely hope that this never occurs.

4) Never verbally or physically abuse your child or any other child while at practices or any tournaments. Any parent or coach who is found abusing a child will be dropped from the team.

5) Wrestlers. There is no horseplay, talking, “goofing off” while a coach is giving instruction on the mats. These coaches give up their time to pass on their experience and should not have to deal with inappropriate behavior.

6) Pikes Peak Wrestling League. After registration you will need to purchase a USA Wrestling card (). The cost of the card is $40. You will need to take this to weigh-ins and tournaments. It is also a good idea to keep a copy of your child’s birth certificate with you in case someone challenges your child’s age. This is for ages 4-14, no high school freshman can compete in these tournaments. They can, however, compete in Rocky Mountain National Tournaments. For most of the tournaments the coaches will send in the weights of the kids, in some cases the wrestlers may have to make a weigh in. We are going to ask that the parents have the wrestling fee by the Thursday practice for that weekend. If the wrestler plans on wrestling, If arrangements need to be made please contact on of the coaches.

7) Cancellations/Changes. Practices or tournaments may need to be cancelled due to weather or school closures. If the school is closed because of weather then practice will be cancelled.

8) Personal Hygiene. Ringworm and impetigo are a major concern for all wrestlers. These conditions can wreck havoc on an individual as well as a team. Each wrestler should shower immediately after practice and tournaments. It is recommended to use Head and Shoulders Dandruff shampoo. Use it like soap. Keep their fingernails trimmed. The mats are mopped with an anti-bacterial/anti-fungal cleaner before every practice. In the event your child gets ringworm it can be treated with Lamisil anti-fungal cream. It can be found in the athlete’s foot area in most stores. Lamisil is a fungicidal (kills the fungus) the other brands are fungi stats (stops it from reproducing but doesn’t kill it). It’s a red spot that gets a crusty, itchy ring. See a coach if you think your child has it.

11) Coaches card. You must have at least a bronze level certificate to be on the mat starting with the 2010-2011 season. This includes parents who want to be mat side to watch, video tape or photograph their child. This certification is good for life. You must wear your card during the tournament. No coaches’ card will be issued.

12) Competing. If you are going to compete you must have a singlet, head gear and shoes. The club sells singlets. Shoes and head gear can be purchased at the following places.

All American Sports, Dick’s Sports, Sports Authority, and Play it Again Sports.

13) Parents. If you work for a company that could sponsor the club please pick up our sponsorship form. This helps pay for building rental fees, equipment, and merchandise.

15) Alumni. Former members of the club who are now in high school can come back and practice for free but must sign a waiver.

As parents, your support is needed to encourage your young wrestler to pay attention in practice, try as hard as he/she can in practice and competition, and to be a good sport win or lose. If he/she does that, he/she will be successful no matter how many matches he/she wins or loses.

Thanks in advance for your support!
