Burnaby & New Westminster Parenting Groups Calendar – February 2014

Group topic descriptions:

• The Art of Mindfulness-Being a parent can be overwhelming. Sometimes we let our emotions take over and other times we are too rational. Learn how to balance the daily challenges with easy to implement mindfulness techniques.

• Baby and Toddler Sign Language (0 – 2 years) – Learning to communicate verbally can be difficult for your children. Come and learn simple and useful signs your children can use to help them communicate with you more effectively.

• Creative Movement (18 months +) – This fun hour allows parent and child to explore movement and dance together through music, imagination, improvisation and play. Creative movement allows parent and child to build emotional connectedness and intimacy. (

• Dealing With Difficult Moments: How to Talk to Your Child About Upsetting Events and Anxiety Provoking Situations – Join us for this informative group on ways to address your child’s anxiety regarding new experiences, as well as their fear or distress about past events. We will discuss the effects of trauma and anxiety on the brain, how to deal with distress and anxiety in the moment, and how to talk through fears and stressful thoughts with your child.

• Development in Children: Handedness – At which age will you know whether your child is left or right handed? Is there a connection between handedness and brain function?

• The Gift of Self Acceptance: Allowing Ourselves and Our Children to be Perfectly Imperfect – Join us for this informative 2-part group that will focus on learning the art of self-acceptance and teaching children how to do the same. We will discuss how to hold ourselves to more realistic standards, learning from our mistakes, and how to appreciate who we really are.

• Helping Children Deal With Disappointment – It is inevitable that all children will experience the heartbreak and frustration that comes with not getting things their way. In this group we will discuss how to help children cope with feelings of disappointment and what to do when children get upset about it.

• How to Encourage Bilingual Language Development in Children - This group focuses on language development from 0-5 years old, and how the learning of multiple languages affects development. We will also discuss some tips and tricks for helping children learn and absorb multiple languages.

• Learning About Numbers – Join us for a fun-filled hour all about learning numbers. We will play different games and activities that help teach young children their numbers. We will also provide parents with ideas that they can use at home to help encourage their child’s learning. (

• “Llama, Llama Misses Mama:” Story Time and Craft – Join us for this interesting story and related craft. We will enjoy the story of a young Llama who misses his mama when he starts school and his journey to make new friends and become independent. We will also complete a craft that will help our children when they miss a loved one.

• Making Sense of Anxiety in Children: Video Viewing and Discussion – In the group we will watch a one hour Gordon Neufeld video on making sense of anxiety in children which focuses on the development and prevention of anxiety in young kids. We follow up with a discussion and an opportunity for follow-up questions on anxiety in young children.

• Mask Making: Every child loves to play dress up and make believe. In this arts and crafts group, we will make our own masks, letting our imaginations go wild and telling stories with them.

• Mommy Yoga – Come and take advantage of great child minding and join us for this relaxing hour where will we learn some basic yoga for moms.

• Parent-Child Songs and Stories (All Ages) - Join us for a fun hour of songs, rhymes and stories. This is a great time for social interaction for yourself and your child.

• Positive Discipline: How to Use Consequences With Children - Take this hour to learn how to use the positive discipline technique of giving natural and logical consequences when teaching your child appropriate behaviours. We will learn what consequences are, how to think up logical consequences for given situations and when to use this technique with your children.

• Pre-school and Kindergarten Readiness – Parents will learn how to best prepare their children for both preschool and kindergarten to enhance future learning. Burnaby resources will be covered.

• Sibling Rivalry – Siblings will never get along 100% of the time! In this group, we will focus on how to deal with sibling rivalry and other unique sibling dynamics.

• Sing-a-Long with Instruments! – Join us for a fun hour of songs and rhymes with musical instruments. This is a great time for social interaction for yourself and your child. (

• Taking Control of Your Moods- Did you know your thoughts, feelings and behaviors are all connected? This group will help you understand their connection and how to control those unfriendly, unwanted moods we get into.

• Technology and Toddlers-A controversial topic that has many sides. Join the discussion, learn the benefits and downfalls of technology use in toddlers, and find the right balance for your home.

• The Secret World of Imaginary Friends - Is it normal for children to have imaginary friends? Learn about the role of imaginary friends and how to respond to them.

• Valentine’s Day Party! – Join us for this fun group to celebrate Valentine’s Day. We will read stories, have snacks and do some Valentine’s themed crafts. Be sure to wear as much pink and red clothing as you can!!

After Hours: Evening Groups: *A light dinner will be provided at all evening groups.

• Brain Development in Young Children: Helping Your Child Grow to Their Full Potential – Join us for this informative 2-hour group on how children’s brains develop and learn what you can do to encourage healthy brain development so  your child can grow to their full potential. 

• Learning to Communicate and Co-Parent After Separation - Parenting children is a difficult task and can often get much more complicated after parents separate. This group will focus on some of the major parenting challenges that mother and father face after separation and divorce, some tips for maintaining a healthy and happy child, and some skills and techniques for maintaining healthy and open communication with your ex.

• To Sign up for group please e-mail pspgroupsignup@ or call 604 436 9449. Please provide the names of all adults and children attending as well as children’s ages.

• If you are sign up for a series group (i.e. Part #1 of 2, or Week #1 of 3) signing up once means that you are signed up for the entire series.

• Groups are for participants of the Parent Support Program. Please call or email ahead to register for groups. No drop-ins please.

• Parenting groups are free of charge for Burnaby and New Westminster residents. Bus tickets are available upon request.

• Some groups are “child participation” which means your child stays with you during the group time. These are marked with a (.

• Some groups are for parents only; however free on–site child minding is available if pre-arranged.

• If you are signed up for a group and cannot make it PLEASE call to cancel as we often have a waitlist for many of our groups.
