What's New?

By Chris Vercelli MATcms, RTS, CPT Greetings my friend! I hope you've had a great month! It sure is nice to have this warmer weather come back. A few times I've had to stop and remind myself that it is still technically supposed to be winter time. Gotta love living in paradise! February was an incredibly busy month for us, but it was very fun too. We got a chance to see the circus while it was in town, we had a great day at an outdoor festival where we got to go on zip lines, do bungee jumps and climb on rock walls, and Saturday mornings we've been watching Christian have a blast playing team soccer again. It seems like one fun thing after another and it's been a nice reward each weekend after working the crazy hours that I have. Since I have yet to find another MAT practitioner, I've been trying to shoulder the full load myself, which has equated to a lot of very long days. My waiting list is still in single digits so I think I'm keeping up well. I thank God that I absolutely love what I do, if I didn't it would be tough! I had the honor of being written about in one of our local papers recently. They did a story about how I'm working with some professional baseball players and how MAT is helping them. I already had a few clients tell me "don't forget about us little guys when you make it to the big time." I just laugh and say that'd be impossible. Last month I also launched a second business (as if I didn't have enough to do already!) which is an educational/consulting business for other MAT practitioners. I put together a manual and a collection of resources for them to use in their practice and it was a very big success. Right now I have 28 clients in that business and I'm very excited to be able to help them help more people. Exciting stuff ahead! I hope you have a great month of March and you enjoy this beautiful weather! God bless you!

How to Eliminate Life's Biggest Energy Zappers- Part 4

This month, we are diving back into the series on how to increase energy and eliminate energy zappers with some tips on how to ensure you get adequate sleep and rest. When you have a lot to do (um...always), usually the first thing to get squeezed off your agenda is sleep. But miss out on shut-eye and your energy, positivity, productivity, and memory are sure to suffer. And nearly a quarter of American adults aren't getting enough rest, which has led to an epidemic of daytime sleepiness, according to a poll by the National Sleep Foundation. The key to bucking this trend is to brush up on sleep hygiene. Try these steps for starters.

Cut back on TV and computer time after 8 p.m. If you're already a night owl (you go to bed late and sleep in on weekends), the bright light emitted from television and computer screens can make falling asleep at a decent hour even harder. The reason: Light suppresses the production of melatonin, a hormone secreted at sunset that tells the brain that it's nighttime, explains John Herman, Ph.D., director of the training program in sleep medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas. And when melatonin levels are low, your brain is fooled into thinking that it's still daytime -- and remains raring to go. Whenever possible, wait until the next morning to tune in and/or log on. If you must use light-emitting technology at night, try to turn it off an hour or two before hitting the sack.

Hide your alarm clock. Watching the clock to see how long it's taking you to drift off or how much time you have left before your alarm goes off can result in a poor night's sleep, says Kelly A. Carden, M.D., medical director of the Sleep Health Center Affiliated with Hallmark Health at Medford in Medford, MA. This hyper vigilance keeps the brain awake and alert and prevents you from slipping into deep, restorative sleep. The easy fix: Set your alarm clock, then either face the numbers away from you or put it on the floor, in a drawer, or across the room.

Give your pet his own separate sleeping space. At night, pets snore, jiggle their tags, move around a lot, and even hog the covers and bed space. It's no wonder that 53 percent of pet owners who sleep with their pets in the bedroom have some type of disrupted sleep every night, according to a study from the Mayo Clinic Sleep Disorders Center in Rochester, MN. Consider relocating your furry friend's sleeping quarters to another area, even if it's just his own bed in your bedroom.

Lower the thermostat. For a good night's sleep, make sure your room is comfortably cool -- enough so that you need a light blanket. This ensures that your environment is in sync with your body's internal temperature, which naturally drops during the night, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Studies suggest the ideal sleeping temperature is between 54 and 75 degrees; anything cooler or warmer may cause you to wake up.

Skip the nightcap. Alcohol depresses the nervous system -- the system of cells, tissues, nerves, and organs that controls the body's responses

to internal and external stimuli. So while sipping a glass of wine before bed may help you nod off, the sedative effects wear off as your body

metabolizes the alcohol, which may cause you to wake up in the middle of the night and have trouble falling back to sleep. Alcohol has also

been shown to interfere with the body's natural 24-hour biorhythms, causing blood pressure to rise and heart rate to race at night when it's

normally calm and relaxed. You don't have to give up that evening cocktail entirely to achieve sound sleep -- just try to avoid alcohol within

two to three hours of bedtime.

Muscle of the Month: Vastus Medialis

This month's muscle is one that plays a very important role in knee health and function. The Vastus Medialis is one of the four muscles in your quadriceps group, which is located on the front of your thigh. The quadriceps is the muscle group that moves your knee from a bent position to a straight position.

When the Vastus Medialis is inhibited or "shut down", certain knee movements can be difficult or even painful. This can include things like squatting, walking up steps, standing up out of a chair, running, walking or doing lower body exercises. When an inhibited Vastus Medialis becomes activated, the entire knee becomes stronger, more flexible and less likely to get injured. This added strength can also allow for the knee to handle more activity without as much pain or difficulty.

Curious if your Vastus Medialis or any other muscle is inhibited? Get it tested with Muscle Activation TechniquesTM

Test Your Brain and See How Many of These You can Get

Answer 3 of them and win a copy of my new book (which currently sells for $8.97 on )"Improve Muscles-Improve Life: A Comprehensive Expose on How Optimizing Muscle Function May be the Missing Link To

Getting What You Want From Your Body"

1. A traveler comes to a fork in the road which leads to two villages. In one village the people always tell lies, and in the other village the people always tell the truth. The traveler needs to conduct business in the village where everyone tells the truth. A man from one of the villages is standing in the middle of the fork, but there is no indication of which village he is from. The traveler approaches the man and asks him one question. From the villager's answer, he knows which road to follow. What did the traveler ask?

2. A man walks into an art gallery and concentrates on one picture in particular. The museum curator notices this and asks the man why he is so interested in that one painting. The man replies, "brothers and sisters have I none, but that man's father is my father's son. Who is in the painting?

3. A farmer in California owns a beautiful pear tree. He supplies fruit to a nearby grocery store. The store owner has called the farmer to see how much fruit is available for him to purchase. The farmer knows that the man has 24 branches. Each branch has 12 boughs and each bough has 6 twigs. Since each twig bears one piece of fruit, how many plums will the farmer be able to sell?

4. A train leaves from New York City (NYC) heading towards Los Angeles (LA) at 100 mph. Three hours later, a train leaves LA heading

towards NYC at 200 mph. Assume there's exactly 2000 miles between LA and NYC. When they meet, which train is closer to New York

City?

Client Highlights

"I came to Chris with a long history of car wrecks and old gymnastics and cheerleading injuries that have plagued me my entire adult life. I heard of MAT through the Chris Evert Academy years ago, but never pursued it until now. Having my exercise physiology degree, I was aware of how interconnected every muscle is and if one muscle is compromised, the entire neuromuscular system is compromised. When I first came to see Chris I was unable to walk, sit or stand without severe back pain, and exercise was not an option. Last night I just finished an intense workout DVD without a drop of pain in my back! I have been through several months of treatment and look forward to the continued improvements in my neck as well. Meeting Chris has been a blessing not just to my health and wellness, but to my spirit as well. He truly cares about the overall well being

and lives of his clients and his positive outlook, faith, and hard work is refreshing and inspiring!"

Lauren Herrald, Sarasota

"I had been getting Chris' newsletters for a while and had been contemplating calling him for MAT because my knee was hurting so bad that I could hardly get around. I finally made the decision to call him and I'm very glad I did. Within just a few weeks I was walking, standing and bending much better and with far less discomfort. I'm so glad I'm not as restricted in what I can do anymore. Thanks Chris!"
