Welcome to Fourth Grade!

Mrs. Campbell and Mrs. Carrell

Are you ready? Fourth grade is an exciting time in a child’s life! We have compiled an information packet to help us get into the fourth grade groove! Please keep this as a reference. If you have any questions, just contact us. Our contact information is at the end of the packet.

Conduct and Work Habits policy:

We have a fourth grade conduct and work habits policy to ensure that every child will take responsibility for their own learning experience. These grades will reflect your child’s choices while in school as well as their quality of work. Each child begins each nine weeks with a 100 in both conduct and work habits and the points will stay the same until points need to be deducted. Points may be deducted for immediate behavior, or added for good choices. If your child’s good and bad points equate to a loss of more than 2 points for the week they will NOT be allowed to participate in our FUN FRIDAY activities for that week.

Report Cards will show behavior and work habits with letter:

E (excellent)= 100-94 S (satisfactory)= 92-80

N (needs improvement) = 78-70 U (unsatisfactory)= 69-below

Student Expectations:

*Respect other people and their belongings by keeping their hands and unkind words to themselves

*Be kind to others by sharing, taking turns, and including others

*Listen when others are talking and waiting until they are called on to speak

*Walk quietly in the hallways and classrooms

*Bring their supplies, books, and work to class and be ready to learn

Red Weekly Folder or “Stop” Folder:

We will try to send a red weekly folder home every Thursday with graded papers and a log with their cumulative work habits and conduct grade for the nine weeks. This will give you a chance to review your child’s graded papers and conduct/work habits grade EVERY week. The graded papers will come from both of your child’s teachers. Once you have reviewed them, sign the log, return the folder with your child EVERY FRIDAY morning. This will allow constant communication each week, so please write praises or concerns for your child!

Expected Homework & Class Work:

Our fourth grade team uses a variety of curriculum resources to ensure that your child receives the best education and learning experience possible.

Reading-

We will have daily reading opportunities, daily lessons, and practice to help familiarize students with the fourth grade level requirements. Any unfinished class work may be sent home for homework.

Language/Writing-

We will be writing, writing, writing!!! We will also focus on grammar, parts of speech, and editing and revising. Any unfinished work may be sent home for homework.

Spelling-

Your child will have a spelling test weekly, and will be responsible for learning the words by Friday’s test.

Math-

We will be using the Envision Math curriculum this year. We have two computer programs, Education Galaxy and ST Math, that will help to reinforce the skills learned from our Envision Math. Any unfinished work may be sent home for homework.

Social Studies-

We will be integrating our social studies curriculum with our math, reading, writing and science classes. In fourth grade we have the pleasure of learning about Texas History.

Science-

We will be using the Pearson Interactive Science curriculum this year and visiting the science lab periodically throughout the year.

Homework: We do not believe in BUSY WORK. If your child has homework, It is probably because they did not complete classroom assignments in a timely manner and must complete them at home. Occasionally, automatic homework will be assigned as deemed necessary.

Green “Go Folders”

Your child will bring a green “go folder” home and back to school daily. This is where they are expected to keep their spelling list, vocabulary list (all of their study lists) and any other work that is not completed. This is our “go to” spot for important daily papers and study sheets. Please DO NOT CLEAN OUT this folder and throw away papers that we may still be working on.

REDO papers:

Daily assignments that receive a failing grade will be sent home in their weekly folders to be corrected and signed by a parent. Students may earn a 50 at the highest for correcting these assignments. These papers will always be due on Friday, when our folders are due. Students will be responsible to turning these papers in for us to regrade.

Accelerated Reading (AR):

This is a reading acceleration program. Students read books on their level and then take a computer quiz to test comprehension. Students earn points from each book that is passed. The reading teachers will be monitoring this in the classroom and the librarian will be keeping track as well. ALL STUDENTS will be required to participate in AR and 9 week goals will be set by your child’s reading teacher. More information will be sent soon. There will be a reward party for reaching their individual goals at the end of each 9 week period.

60% of fourth grade is BRAND-NEW to your child! They are transitioning from a young 3rd grader to a big 5th grader. It is a tough year, but we will get through it together!

Party helpers and homeroom mom:

We have 3 parties and other activities throughout the year and things definitely go more smoothly with help! If you would like to be a homeroom mom or a party helper, please let us know. Most of our activities will be on Fridays, but some will be during the weekdays. If you can not volunteer for helping in this way, sending items is a HUGE help too! Just send a note, email, or call the school to let me know that you are interested. We have a great year ahead of us!

Our classroom supply list:

The fourth Grade Supply list is on the Bonner Elementary Web page. We also have a list of items that are used by our students throughout the year. These are “wish list” items and are not mandatory items. If you can possibly send any of these items now and/or throughout the year, it would be WONDERFUL!

~Expo dry erase markers

~Staples

~Scotch Tape

~Waterless Hand Sanitizer

~Post-It notes

~Paper Towels

~and pencils… they disappear quickly!

We are very excited for this year to get into motion and we look forward to working with and teaching your child everyday. Fourth grade will be a fun year, but we will be learning a TON of new material.

Remember… 60% of what we learn in fourth grade is brand-spanking new, so hang on and enjoy the ride!

We check our email accounts several times each day and we also each have a class webpage that is linked from the Hudson ISD website, under “Schools”, “Bonner Elementary”, “Faculty and Staff”, “Fourth grade”, and then our names. We will list assignments and upcoming events when possible.

Thank you!
