HOW TO DO A GREAT SCHOOL RALLY

How To Do A Great School Rally

YOUR PURPOSE IS TWOFOLD: (1) TO GET EVERY BOY REALLY EXCITED TO JOIN CUB SCOUTS, AND (2) TO TEACH THE BOYS A TECHNIQUE THAT WILL HELP THEM SELL THEIR PARENTS ON BRINGING THEM TO JOIN CUB SCOUTS. BE SURE TO CALL THE SCHOOL THE DAY BEFORE TO RECONFIRM YOUR ASSEMBLIES AND CHECK THAT THE CUB SCOUT FLYERS WERE DELIVERED TO THE SCHOOL. CALL ROBERT SCHERINI IF THE FLYERS ARE NOT THERE. (732-2222)

The Big Day

(Wear your uniform and have three patches available for give away rewards.)

Arrive 20 minutes before your first scheduled assembly. Check in with the school office to pickup flyers and for the location of your assemblies. Check on which teachers will be present during your assemblies to help with student arrival, seating, handing out flyers, crowd control, dismissal, etc. Head for your assembly area and get ready.

1. As students and teachers arrive, get teachers to help with seating and flyers. Pass out flyers by table or row and give the boys verbal instructions to “Take one off the top and pass the rest down”. Have some boys bring the extras back up to you.

2. As soon as all boys are sitting down give the “Sign’s Up” Cub Scout sign. Go on ahead and introduce yourself when everyone is quiet. Play “Sign’s Up” a few times.

3. Have the boy’s vote on things they really like when you name it. They vote “YES they like it” by raising their hand for one second and then taking it down. Name things on the flyer and don’t forget patches, Cuboree Fun Day, bow and arrow shooting, B.B. gun shooting, etc. (This can get wild, and that’s okay as long as it doesn’t get out of hand. You will probably need to use signs up a time or two.) The last vote is: “How many want to join Cub Scouts and have lots of fun like this?”

4. Tell them you have good news and bad news. The bad news is that they have to come to the join up meeting this Thursday night at 7:00 in the school cafeteria, with their parent or guardian. The good news is that you know a special way of getting their parents to say “YES” and bring them Thursday night.

5. Have a race to fold the flyer in half four times and hold it up when they’re done. When they finish have them put it in their pocket or deep in their sock if no pockets.

6. Pick a boy to come up and help you. Ask his name. Tell him in a whisper that he is going to pretend he is your Mom and to say “NO” only two times, but then to say “YES” the 3rd time.

7. Tell everyone “Okay, we are going to pretend that (boy’s name) is my Mommy.” (Big laugh) Role play: “Hi Mom, I’m home” (Wave and wait for reaction.) “Mom, I have a surprise for you, Ready? One, Two, Three.” (Pull the flyer out quick-draw style and say) “Tickle, tickle, tickle”. (Do not really tickle the boy.) “Look Mom” (Open flyer) “Please I really want to be a Cub Scout” (Mom says NO!) “But Mom, Look at all the fun things, Please” (Mom says NO!) (Pretend to cry a little) “Mom, Please, I’ll do anything; I’ll clean my room; I’ll wash your car; I’ll pay for it myself. Please just tell me what I have to do?” (Mom says something and you agree to do it.) “Thanks Mom, You’re the Best!” (Give the boy a patch , publicly, for his help.)

8. In closing, Have everyone repeat after you, (Hi Mom), (Mom, I have a surprise for you), (One), (Two), (Three), (Cub Scouts), (Please). Thank everyone for being so great and a good audience. Tell them you expect to see everyone again Thursday night.

9. Let the teachers dismiss the students and get them back to their rooms. You need to catch your breath, try to relax, and get ready for the next group.

It is extremely important that you meet the custodian before you leave and find out who will be on duty for School Night. Also, who and what phone number do you call in case of an emergency or the building is locked! (Yes, It has happened more than once.)
