First Day of School Icebreaker
This is a fun way to do introductions on the first day. It is very similar to the M&M ice breaker but doesn't involve chocolate (which sometimes isn't the best thing to give little
ones within the first 10 minutes of the first day of school! Lol -)
Start out by explaining to students that they are going to get to know a little more about you. Show them a box of Crayons (8 count). Display the poster on the following page (you can put it on your Smart Board or use your document camera). Reach in and pull out a crayon. Use the color to guide which tidbit of information you are going to tell them. For example, if you pull the green crayon you are going to tell them your favorite food. Continue pulling crayons and using the chart to guide your answers until all 8 crayons are used. Then tell the class that you are going to give them a chance to do the same. Pass out a box of 8 crayons to each student. Tell everyone in the group to pull a color. Call on several students to share out their name and the answer to their color question to the class. Repeat this process until all 8 crayons have been used and everyone has had
a chance to share. Tell the class that they can keep their crayons if they promise to put them in a safe "homework spot" at home so they can use them later. Next, read aloud the story The Crayon Box That Talked. (You will revisit this story later in the year if you purchase my Coming to America unit on TpT). Use the book to discuss classroom rules and respect. Finally, pass out a crayon template to each student. Have them choose
their favorite fact about themselves from the previous activity and write it on their crayon. You can use these as a cute bulletin board for open house!
I added a bonus page that includes a simple, yet meaningful quote that my students and I use throughout the year. I have the students trace it, cut it out, and glue it to the other side of their crayon.
