New Jersey Council of Physical Fitness and Sports Tip of the Month – May 2015After this long, cold winter it is great to celebrate the warmer weather. May has been identified as the National Physical Fitness and Sports month. The New Jersey Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (NJCPFS) was formed by the state legislature in 2001 and consists of 15 public members appointed by the Governor. Members are charged with fostering and developing safe, healthful and enjoyable physical fitness and sports programs serving the citizens of New Jersey. Our members are experts in many areas, including sports medicine, nutrition, physical education, professional sports, physical therapy and healthful lifestyles. Each month a Council member will write a NJ Physical Fitness and Sports Health and Fitness Tip of the Month. Monthly tips, prepared by Council members, will highlight an area in the vast world related to wellness including physical fitness, sports, health, recreation and nutrition. We welcome your comments and suggestions for possible topics.May is the perfect month to inaugurate this project. The problems associated with inactivity are well documented and have become an increasing burden on the citizens of NJ. Just 30 minutes of increased activity each day has a tremendous benefit for all age groups. It will improve muscular fitness, bone strength and heart health of our children and adolescents. Adults will lower their risk of developing heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer and our older citizens can lower their risk of falls, while improving their learning and judgment skills.Perhaps most importantly, physical activity has to be fun! The range of beneficial activities is nearly limitless and quite often even more enjoyable with someone else like a partner, buddy, colleague or neighborhood friend. It is our sincere hope that this tip sheet will, in future editions, offer suggestions to help increase your desire to be active and also develop a fun filled healthy lifestyle.Timothy Hosea, MDChairperson, New Jersey Council on Physical Fitness and Sports ................
