KELLY, Bernadette Peacefully at the Kingston General Hospital on Wednesday, December 31, 2003. Bernadette Mary Kelly of Enterprise, at age 66. Bernadette was a longtime dedicated member of the Catholic Women's League of Canada. In the words of Nation al President, Marie Cameron, "Bernadette is a beloved, well respected President of the Archdiocese of Kingston 2003, short term as her illness forced her to resign." Bernadette's dignity, gentle courage and faith filled acceptance of God's will is a shining example to her League sisters who love and thank her. She is survived by her husband Eugene Kelly and her sons Bernard (Lori); Raymond (Lisa); and Michael (Stella) of Whitby and Patrick Kelly at home. Grandmother of Ashleigh, Jadea, Ryan, Jus tin, Danielle, Nadine, Thomas and Matthew. Sister of Donald of Lindsay; Leo of St. Thomas and the late Michael. WARTMAN, Robert Patterson Robert left on New Year's Eve, as always over the past 53 years, with his wife Norma at his side. Together on the boat with lots of grandchildren (14), five great kids Chris (Kathy), Paul (Janna), Carol Mackillop (formerly Q uirt) (Bill Mackillop), Colin (Brenda), Charlotte Van Leeuwen (Atul Swarup), and siblings Jean Moore, Alvin, Hester Caldwell, Alice Paul, Caroline Campbell, and Nancy Warren. Leaving his dogs, cottage, duck blind, canoe, tame geese he thought were wi ld, clay courts, the Wilson farm, deer camouflage, blue cheese & aged steak, the old truck, the River Road, and glorious trees. Mary Marguerite Brennan Our Mom, (Mary) Marguerite Brennan (nee Kenny) of Marysville passed away on November 10, 2003 after a lengthy illness at Lennox & Addington County Hospital. Born in Enterprise on August 14, 1927. She was predeceased by her par ents Bernadette & Anthony Kenny and her sisters Carmel Bartsch and Mildred Lyman and brothers Leo and Bernard. She lived in Enterprise until she married her husband Harold Brennan of 47 years, and moved to Marysville to start her family. She had seve n children -Vincent (Beverley) of Stirling; Paul of Marysville; Carol (Brian Botting) of Napanee; Lorraine (Tony Schick) of Trenton; and Catherine of Stirling; predeceased by Gerard and Dennis (died of Muscular Dystrophy). Mom was blessed with 7 gran dchildren -Kaitlyn and Brittany Brennan; Michael and Joseph Botting; Hilary, Anthony and Abby Schick. Mom was also known as Aunt Peg to her nieces and nephews: Don Bartsch and Lorretta; Keith Bartsch and wife Helen; Eleanor Wager and husband Lyle; Bo b Bartsch and wife Gwen; Paul Bartsch and his wife; Leo Lyman and his wife Nancy and predeceased by Mary Kenny. She will be missed by her brother-in-law Gerald Bartsch and sister-in-laws Carmelita Power (Ken); Jean Brady; John Burd; and Marjorie McCa uley (Gerard); and predeceased by Monica Burd and Patricia and Pat McCutcheon. Mom belonged to the Marysville Catholic Women's League and enjoyed attending the Fall Fairs after years of supporting her children through the various 4-H programs. Howard Ross Best Of Elgin, passed away at Kingston General Hospital following a brief illness on June 12, 2003. He was in his 75th year. Mr. Best was the son of the late Frank Henry Best and Margaret May Darling Best and was born at Chaffey's Lock. H e was retired for 18 years, prior to that he was employed as a Maintenance Mechanic, Construction Millwright, DuPont Canada, Canadian Locomotive, Davis Tannery and attended Pine Grove Elementary School and Elgin United Church. His special interests w ere fishing, deer hunting, carving, playing guitar for family entertainment and was considered to be knowledgable in repairing almost anything. He is survived by his wife Hazel (nee Dorman), sons Bryan (Donna), Robert (Debbie), daughter Karen, sister s-in-law Mary Best and Genevieve Best. He was predeceased by infant daughter Marilyn, daughter Joyce Harbison and infant grandson Todd Harbison. The Funeral was held on June 16, 2003 with Rev. Don McLean officiating. LYNCH, Lawrence Alexander (Alex) On Monday, December 29, 2003, at the Kingston General Hospital, age 77. Beloved husband of Elsie Yates. Loving father of Andrew (Kingston), Anne (Kaye C) Gladman and proud grandfather of Sara and Branden Gladman and D aun Lynch (all of Ottawa). Dear brother of Marie (John) Wintle (Grand Bend, Ontario) and Jeannette (Spencer) Pepper (Olds, Alberta). Predeceased by his parents, Ethel and Vincent Lynch, brother Joseph and son Michael. Following wartime service in the RCAF Alex graduated from Macdonald College (McGill) in 1951. After several years in industrial companies he joined the Department of Defence Production and later transferred to Industry, Trade and Commerce, retiring in 1977. JAFFE, Bernie Bernard (Bernie) Daniel Jaffe, 58, brought music, laughter and love to everyone he met. He was a musician, music teacher and long-time resident of Tamworth, Ontario. Bernie died peacefully at his home on Friday, January 2 after a brief illness. Bernie, who lived his life with grace, a unique style and great humour, was surrounded by the love of his family. He adored his wife Faun and was lovingly proud of his three sons: Lucas, Leigh and Max Bank-Jaffe. Bernie's strength and loyal support of friends, family and neighbours made him the centre of his community. Bernie was born in Glen Wild, New York and moved to Canada in 1967. He is survived by his loving sister Naomi Jaffe of Troy, N.Y. and his mother Sadie Bakst Jaffe of Glen Wild, N.Y. He was predeceased by his father Abe in 2003. Bernie was known as the fiddle player's fiddle player. Throughout his career he played with a variety of prominent Canadian bands. He inspired many musicians and old friends who played with hi m over the years as well as the young students he taught. There were many who had the golden opportunity to share and learn from him. He gave them a joy of music, the passion of his sweet fiddle and the loving spirit of people making music together. Service will be held at the Hannah Funeral Home, Tamworth (379-2997) on Monday, January 5 at 1 p.m. Interment Tamworth Cemetery. HOLOBOW, Padre Marat M. RCAF, CAF March 9, 1925 - January 6, 2004 Proud Veteran of World War II It is with sadness and deep loss that the family of Marat M. Holobow announces his passing on the 6th of January, 2004 at the Kingston General Hospital. " Marty" and his beloved wife Marian celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary this year. The family was blessed to have spent this past Christmas all together at home: children Dan (Jennifer-Lynn Marcus), Naomi (Fred Genesee) and Mike (Grace Aubrecht) , as well as grandchildren Ajay, Patricia, Jennifer and James. Fond uncle of Lesley Skinner (Kevin) and Kim Pasacreta (Stephen) of Vancouver and only brother of the late Gertrude Schedler. The congregations of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church i n Kingston as well as St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Montreal will share in the family's loss. After his discharge following the war, Marty returned to school, and it was at Luther College, Regina, where he first met Marian. He was ordained in 1954. During the next 25 years, he served as Protestant Chaplain at bases throughout Canada, France and Germany. Among other activities, he also served in the Middle East as part of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force, and as chairman of the Canadian Bi ble Society, Montreal Branch. After retiring from the military, he continued his ministry as pastor at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Montreal and practiced caring ministry for the infirmed of St. Mark's in Kingston, Ontario. Marty lived with grace, love, compassion and dignity. His other passions were Marian, his family, flying, Canadian politics, history and sports. He will be deeply missed. The family is grateful for the care provided by the medical staff at the Kingston General Hospital. ALLMARK, Benjamin Graydon Born on June 1st, 1911 in Kingston passed away peacefully on January 4, 2004 in Victoria, B.C. Ben lived in Kingston most of his life. After spending 11 yrs with Canada Steamship Lines, he went to work for Alcan where he sta yed until his retirement 30 yrs. later. From 1954-1962 he was active in municipal and federal politics and later served on the Board of Governor's for St. Lawrence College. One of his favorite pastimes was curling and he belonged to the Kingston Curl ing Club, attaining the status of Lifetime Member. In 1976, Ben and his wife, Shirley, retired to Victoria where many years of good health allowed them to enjoy lawn bowling, travelling and in their later years, cruises that run up the Alaskan coast. Ben had a variety of interests and though he often said there weren't enough hours in the day, he succeeded in having a full and interesting life. Ben leaves behind and will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 61 yrs., Shirley (Dick), his childr en, Gordon of Kingston and Diane (Snell) of Victoria; four grandsons, Michael and Gordon Snell, Ben and Richard Allmark; and one great-grandson, Brian. He was also survived by his only brother, Gordon, of Ottawa, who passed away on January 6, 2004. T here will be a graveside service at 2:30 p.m. Sat. She taught school in one room scho ols in the Wilson, NY and Newfane, NY areas prior to her marriage to Robert J. Horton, who predeceased here on August 14, 1994. She assisted her husband in Horton's Hardware Store in Wilson, NY for many years. She enjoyed gardening, nature and her ne ighbours. She is survived by one daughter: Kathleen (Clara Hovatt) Horton of Kingston, Ontario, Canada, Two sons: Charles (Ann) Horton and Thomas (Cheryl) Horton both of Wilson, NY. Kenneth Irwin Carr After a lengthy illness, Kenneth Irwin Carr passed away December 24, 2003 at his Kingston home. A lifetime resident of Kingston, Ken was born August 25, 1936, attended Victoria School and KCVI and was a member of St. Georges Cathed ral. He and his wife Margaret (Hodgson) celebrated 45 years of marriage in June of 2003. Ken was a Life Member and Past President of both the Kingston Navy Vets and Royal Canadian Legion #9, Past President of Kingston Lakeshore West Lions Club, and a member of Kingston Poppy Fund in support of Veterans and their spouses. In younger years he served as Commanding Officer with the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets Corp, St. Lawrence. He was employed with Bell Canada for thirty-five years from where he reti red twelve years ago. Ken enjoyed visiting the E-Bay Auction House on line. He collected stamps, coins and rocks. He is survived by his wife Margaret, son Kevin (Bonnie Morton), daughters Linda Trotter and Barbara (Mike) Croft; grandchildren Philip a nd Kevin Croft, Ryan Trotter and John Bishop; mother Marjorie Burnette; step-brothers Abe, John and Anson Horrocks, step-sister Lil Robb, nieces and nephews. Ken was predeceased by his step-parents Bernice Carr and Archie Burnette and father Irwin Ca rr. The funeral was held on Monday December 29, 2003 with Alex Wakeling officiating. Charles William Hodgson After a lengthy illness, Charles passed away December 17, 2003 at the age of 86. Born in Cherrywood (Pickering Township), he was a resident of the Harrowsmith area for 80 years. He farmed in Harrowsmith with his wife Florence "Mona" (Ball) for over 35 years. As a child he attended Harrowsmith Public School and Sydenham High School and for 31 years was a member of Portland Community Church. He has been a member of the Lakeview Gospel Assembly for the past three years. Char les special interests included fishing, hunting and cottage life. He enjoyed working with the children in the church community and was a member of the S & A Club and a 60 year member of 109 Albion Lodge. Charles retired 24 years ago after working for Alcan Canada for 32 years. He is survived by his wife Mona, daughter Lucille (Dale) Bruce, son Harold (Lorri) Hodgson, six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, sister Marjorie (Duane) Thompson, nieces and nephews. Charles was predeceased by his son Brian, daughter Sherry, parents Arthur W. and Regina May Hodgson, brothers Harry, George, Roy and Ernie. The funeral was held December 20, 2003 with Rev David Spurrell and John F. Craig officiating. EMBURY, Leonard On the 18th of January, 2004 at his home in Mississauga, Leonard passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. TOWNSEND, JoAnna Marie July 10, 1952 - January 23, 2004 It is with sorrow that we announce the death of JoAnna Townsend, at home and in the presence of her family. Sustained by the love and devotion of her husband and daughters, and with the support of many friends, she fought a determined and courageous battle with a brain tumour first diagnosed in March 2000. JoAnna was devoted to her family, her friends and her colleagues. Though JoAnna had many talents and interests, her three daughters were the light of her life. She passes on to them her love of music, flowers, books, conversation and good food, her beauty and kindness. She was blessed with an adventurous spirit. This led to her many travels: she spent a year in Paris and traveled thr ough Europe at age 19; she participated in a World University Services Canada (WUSC) trip to China in 1978; she experienced a typhoon in Hong Kong and woke up to a volcano eruption in Guatemala; she rafted the Grand Canyon; she canoed the tranquil wa ters of Algonquin Park and the Gatineau; she danced the Tango in Buenos Aires. JoAnna was enchanted by Latin America. She travelled to Antigua, Guatemala, to perfect her Spanish in 1978. Few could resist her intelligence and persuasive charm in any l anguage or on any continent. JoAnna graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1971 (Head Girl), Univ. of Ottawa and UBC (M. Sc.-Int'l Business). She worked for Export Development Corporation for five years. She founded Townsend Trade Strategies in 198 9, which allowed her to apply her expertise in trade to Canadian companies doing business in the NAFTA region and beyond. Her fluency in Spanish facilitated projects in Latin America. She was proud to serve in the Dept. of Foreign Affairs and Interna tional Trade, which she joined in 1997 as Director of the Small and Medium Enterprises Division, and she immensely enjoyed interacting with aboriginal and women entrepreneurs. JoAnna served as Treasurer on the Board of Directors of WUSC; a founding m ember of the Ottawa branch of the Legal Education and Action Fund for Women; Treasurer on the Board of Directors of the North American Institute; Executive Committee Member of the Medical Friends of Peru; and Presidente du Comite special pour la pres ervation de l'enseignement secondaire publique de langue francaise dans l'ouest d'Ottawa. She was active in the Brain Tumour Support Group and made many new friends through this group. Her grace, fortitude and wisdom in the face of illness have been an inspiration to all of us. She leaves behind her husband Ted Friesen and their daughters Meghan, Genevieve and Ariane; her mother, Ida and father, Gordon; her sisters Martha, Madeleine and Andrea. Her sister Elizabeth predeceased her in 1964. A mem orial service will be held at the Ottawa Unitarian Church, 30 Cleary Ave., at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 30, 2004. A funeral mass will be said for JoAnna at Sacred Heart Church on Wolfe Island at 1:15 p.m. on Saturday, January 31 (ferry departs Ki ngston at 12:30 p.m.). Loving husband of Sherrie (nee Bark) and father of Sarah, Emily, Patrick, Ca ssie and Salina. Treasured son of Lynda and Don of Kingston. Cherished brother of Karen VanLuven (Rick) and Donny Veley (Tina) all of Kingston. Loving son-in-law of Marlene Bark and Mike Clark, and brother-in-law of Matthew and Rachel Bark and Ryan F arrington. He will be lovingly remembered by his several nieces and nephews.
