SERIOUS BLUES

SERIOUS BLUES

Andy Hodge is undoubtedly one of the most versatile bass players in the UK and has been playing bass for over 25 years. His theatre show credits include Joseph, Home & Away, Fame and more than three years with Blood Brothers. Other tours include work with Lorna Luft, Dave Willetts, James D Ingram and Wayne Sleep.

Andy’s Blues roots started a long time ago, when he arranged a 24hr Blues Jam for charity. Since then he has been found playing in Delta Groove, Wonderbrass and Raw Glory to mention a few. Andy can often be seen lending his bass sounds to many Blues Jam nights around the Capital..

Andy is a serious rocker at heart and can be currently found in the wings of the London’s Dominion Theatre “We Will Rock You” show, as he is now a dep for Bass player Neil Murray (Whitesnake), and is currently in a new fusion band with Russell Gilbrook (Uriah Heep) Jamie Humphries (The Brian May Band and We will Rock You.)

Sam Kelly’s playing career started in the early 1970’s with “Cymande”, an 8-piece ‘Nyah Rock’/British funk band which achieved most of its success in the USA between 1971-1974. Sam’s self-taught style of drumming has placed him in the drumseat with Cymande, Dr. John, Chaka Khan, Eddie Floyd, Robert Plant, Michelle Shocked and the late, great Gary Moore. Sam played drums on Gary’s last R&B album, “Bad for you Baby”. Besides running his own bands, Sam is also very much a part of Mick Ralphs Blues Band.

Sam continues to work all over the U.K. and in many areas of Europe, stamping his brand on all genres of music, from blues to rock, R&B, funk, soul and reggae. With a delicate sensitivity to rhythm and a great understanding of dynamics in music, he has earned the respected position of Musical Director for Soul Britannia. Sam has also been honoured in Blues in Britain’s “Gallery of Greats” after winning ‘UK Drummer of the Year’ for five years running.

Phil Astles self taught and full of youthful enthusiasm is undoubtedly one of the most promising up and coming talents on the crowded blues-rock scene.

Whether you have seen him with Big Wayne Williams and the Roadhogs, Blues Factory, Delano Rockets, Jules and the Gamblers or Big Azza and the Delta Groove, you have been gripped by his charm, killer guitar tone and surprising depth of knowledge of the various blues genres. “Well over two weeks, maybe three” is Phil’s response to the question how long would it take to listen to your Blues music collection back to back without sleep.

Described by Blues In Britain Magazine as a “future somebody within the British Blues Scene”,

Asked to describe his style, Phil laughs “it’s just me going crazy with a guitar and a curly lead”. “I never quite know what is going to come out – just the truth I suppose. No gimmicks for sure – and that is important to me”. If you imagine a sledgehammer crashing down an elegantly lined velvet staircase smashing everything up on the way and then landing proudly upright, you are about there. “I play songs, but it is important to me everything is improvised and every night is a different gig. That’s my gift to the audience”
