NOSY CROW

Kirsty Applebaum made waves with her debut middle grade book The Middler which was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children's Book Prize.

She returns with TrooFriend, an absorbing and at times slightly sinister story about artificial intelligence. Busy parents are encouraged to buy the latest robot to keep their child company. At first Sarah is scathing, why would she want a robot as a friend, then she realises she'll be able to show her off at school, get her to tidy her room. But soon rumours start spreading about these robots who can read every emotion and watch a child's every move, might they too have feelings like the children who befriend them? A thought provoking novel about ethics, friendship and what it means to be human.

There is also the very moving and human story as the two teenage boys with great bravery search for and find Keiko, Hiro's five-year-old sister. But then Keiko is lost when Mizuki's grandfather has no option but to leave her in a safe place while he goes for help... GUPPY BOOKS

Song Beneath the Tides by Beverley Birch publishes on 2 April 2020.

It’s a beautifully crafted book - part love story, part ghost story, part thriller – set in Africa where Beverley grew up until early adulthood in the 1950s/60s. It explores important themes for our times: the scars left upon a country by its history; the horrors of animal poaching; and the effects of uncontrolled tourism on people and places.

Ally arrives from England with her brothers to stay for a month in Africa – weeks of running wild on an unspoiled, untamed coast amid mangrove creeks, vast sandy beaches, coral reefs and warm seas. But on their first walk through the forest to the beach, Ally is swamped by a sense of an unseen presence close to her – of being spoken to. Making friends with Leli from the loval village, the young people dare each other to explore the island of Kisiri, a place of local legend, protected and feared: But fear can change things, divide people.
