Closing (Concluding) Sentences of a Paragraph

Closing (Concluding) Sentences of a Paragraph

• A good closing (or “concluding”) sentence for any paragraph is one that ends the paragraph AND works to bring the topic to closure

• This sentence is one that often will usually try to mention or tie back to the topic’s main idea/reason/thesis in some way

• Avoid writing sentences such as the following:

1. “I just told you about…”

2. “You just read about…”

3. “Thanks for reading…”

4. “You just learned about…”

5. “I hope you enjoyed my paragraph about…”

6. “I just wrote and told you about…”

7. Etc.

• The idea is to somehow “restate” your topic’s main idea/reason/thesis in a “clever” way so that your reader walks away with that last sentence and can hopefully remember the main details

• Here are some examples based on Mr. Moffatt’s stories in class about his dogs:

1. “So whether it’s terrorizing cats or antagonizing Wilson, Kota remains one of my favorite dogs because of his knack for playing wildly.”

(Idea/Reason: Kota plays wildly for topic “favorite pet & why”)

2. “Even though it can be physically exhausting for the person giving one, Wilson sure LOVES massages!”

(Idea/Reason: Wilson loves massages for topic “favorite pet & why”)

3. “Funny to watch yet shocking to see, Cooper’s ability to carry LARGE objects in his mouth is just one reason he is my favorite pet and a good dog.”

(Idea/Reason: Cooper’s ability to carry large objects in his mouth/jaws for

topic “favorite pet & why”)

4. “It is this uncanny ability to carry large objects in his mouth that is just one reason why my dog Cooper is my favorite pet.”

(Idea/Reason: Cooper’s ability to carry large objects in his mouth/jaws for

topic “favorite pet & why”)

5. “These are just some of the examples that show how my dog Wilson just loves massages and makes him a favorite pet.”

(Idea/Reason: Wilson loves massages for topic “favorite pet & why”)

6. “Playing wildly is just one reason why my dog Kota is a favorite pet of mine.”

(Idea/Reason: Kota plays wildly for topic “favorite pet & why”)
