EXT. a busy city street – somewhat fifth Avenue in New York. The street buzzes with the noise of shoppers, employees of all trades and cab drivers answering back to other irate cab drivers. The street is decorated for Christmas and the shop windows are adorned with Christmas decorations top to bottom. As the street scene commences we notice a middle-aged woman has not moved from the shop window. Her back is toward us but as we move closer we can see her reflection, she is unhappy. In front of her behind the glass in a beautiful display are a pair of Pointe shoes for the classical ballerina. After a brief glance the shoes are gone we look toward the woman and she too is gone down the street.
1. EXT. SHOPPE – A young boy about 6, maybe 7 exits the shop with a neatly wrapped package, he begins running toward the woman, catching up to her he grasps her hand.
WOMAN
David! Where have you been?
DAVID
Christmas shopping.
WOMAN
I’ve been up and down this street looking for you.
DAVID
Sorry.
David bows his head, the woman smiles.
WOMAN
Did you find the right gift?
DAVID
Yes, she’ll love it.
WOMAN
I’m sure she’ll be very pleased, but you know just having you there will make her Christmas even brighter.
They carry on down the street as we….
CUT TO:
2. INT. HOSPITAL – David’s Father stands looking out a window, he watches the street below silently contemplating. David enters the scene from a nearby elevator, and embraces his father at the hips.
DAVID
How is she?
FATHER
Fine, she’s doing fine. Today was a good day.
DOCTOR SASLICK enters she is a competent woman of around 40, she is also a family friend.
DOCTOR
Rueben?
David’s Father responds.
RUEBEN
How did she do?
DOCTOR
It’s spreading quicker than we thought earlier.
(seeing David) Hello David, what have you got there?
DAVID
Elsie and I went shopping, its for mother.
DOCTOR
I bet you got her just what she wanted.
DAVID
I always do.
RUEBEN
May I speak to you in private Doctor, David play out here for a minute please.
DOCTOR SASLICK and RUEBEN exit, David plays with the toys in the waiting area.
CUT TO:
3. INT Office – RUEBEN and DOCTOR SASLICK enter, she quietly shuts the door as RUEBEN falls into the chair.
RUEBEN
I can’t do it Anna.
ANNA
Rueben, you can’t shut him out. I see the way you look at him.
RUEBEN
When I look at him I see her.
ANNA
Its time you stop masking the truth Tracy can’t always have this chronic cold.
RUEBEN
Anna –
CUT TO:
4. Waiting Area – David has gotten quite bored with his game and makes his way through the halls. We follow behind him as he stops at the door marked TRACY MICHAELS – He looks in all we can see are feet covered by a sterile blue blanket and long curtains. He walks in quietly.
TRACY (weakly)
David, Hey! What are you doing here?
DAVID
Elsie dropped me off.
TRACY
Where’s Daddy?
DAVID
In an office with Mrs. Saslick.
TRACY
Are they talking very quietly?
DAVID
I think the word daddy used is privately.
TRACY
Okay, I see you have a gift, is that for your gift exchange tomorrow?
DAVID
Not exactly. I don’t have any money left.
TRACY
What did you do with it all?
DAVID
Oh, I spent it.
TRACY
You spent it? Every penny?
DAVID
(digging through his pockets)
Not every penny
He pulls out three or four pennies covered in lint. Tracy laughs weakly and coughs.
TRACY
May I ask who the gift is for?
DAVID
Well, it’s kind of a surprise.
TRACY
A surprise, all right then. Are you able to tell me?
David leans over and is about to whisper in her ear but instead playfully moves over and kisses her on the forehead.
TRACY
You sneak, you tricked me.
DAVID
(laughing)
I know.
RUEBEN
(OC)
What’s going on here?
He enters the room from behind the curtain and smiles.
RUEBEN
I see you have a guest, I will leave you two alone – (playfully) hey pal no funny stuff!
RUEBEN winks and is about to leave when –
DAVID
But I am Lex Luther! About to take Lois Lane back to my lair.
TRACY
(playing as best she can)
Who will save me?
RUEBEN
(a total fool- but loving it)
Here I am to save the day!
DAVID
(regretfully)
No Dad, that’s mighty mouse!
RUEBEN
Oh.
Tracy and Rueben laugh.
TRACY
Oh, sweetie that’s enough playing right now Mommy, is getting tired.
DAVID
Are you getting better
TRACY
By the second, every time I see you I feel ten times better.
DAVID
Does that mean in 4 more visits you’ll be able to come home?
TRACY
Soon sweetie, very soon.
DAVID
All right.
DAVID exits leaving the package behind. RUEBEN sits on the chair, from here he can see David playing in the waiting area.
RUEBEN
What do I say Tracy?
TRACY
What do you want to say?
RUEBEN
I want to say that in four visits you’ll be home safe with David and I, but I don’t know that to be true.
TRACY
He has to know the truth Rueben, however it may be.
RUEBEN
I know.
TRACY
Promise me, that you will tell him the truth.
RUEBEN
I promise.
He kisses her softly on the forehead. He see’s the package
RUEBEN
What’s that?
TRACY
I think its his gift exchange present for school tomorrow. He says it’s a surprise.
RUEBEN picks up the gift and lifts the tag – we see in a sloppy childs writing it reads “to Mommmie”
RUEBEN
(softly)
cute.
Tracy Smiles – she begins drifting to sleep- the chemotherapy has worn her down.
RUEBEN
Sleep peaceful my love.
RUEBEN exits quietly leaving the gift on her bed. We watch him exit retrieving DAVID and embracing him rather firmly but gently.

TRACY
(reading)
“To Mommmie”
Tracy gulps back tears.
TRACY
(softly)
Cute.
The phone beside her bed rings.
TRACY
Hello?
DAVID
(on phone)
Hi Mommy, guess what?
TRACY
(wiping tears)
What?
DAVID
I got an “A” on my spelling test.
TRACY
(wiping more tears)
You did?
DAVID
The teacher brought me up to the front of the room and showed me off.
TRACY
(laughing through tears)
I bet you were happy. Did Daddy put it on the fridge?
DAVID
Yeah, but he had to remove the picture of you and me
TRACY
(trying not to cry she looks away and the on the chair is that very picture)
I’m sure he has found a special spot.
There is a pause in the dialog as Tracy tries to control her tears.
DAVID
Are you Okay Mommy?
TRACY
I’m fine sweetie.
DAVID
Mommy?
TRACY
Yes?
DAVID
Are you going to die?
TRACY is frozen. Rueben has kept his promise. Tears well up again.
TRACY
But it doesn’t mean that we still can’t see eachother?
DAVID
But when- where?
TRACY
Remember our special meeting spot?
DAVID
no.
TRACY
Well lets go there now. Close your eyes?
Are they closed?
DAVID
Yep
TRACY
What do you see?
DAVID
I don’t see anything.
TRACY
Look harder – see anything yet
DAVID
I see clouds.
TRACY
That’s where we’ll meet.
DAVID
In the clouds?
TRACY
That’s right, whenever your lonely or you just want to talk and tell me what you did in school you close your eyes look for the clouds and there I’ll be waiting for you.
DAVID
Mommy
TRACY
(holding back tears)
Uh huh?
DAVID
Merry Christmas.
See ya later Alligator
TRACY
(almost gasping through tears)
In a while crocodile.
There is an audible click as David hangs up the phone, Tracy lays the receiver on her chest, she cries a bit, then hangs the receiver back on the phone. Noticing the gift she
Adjusts her position and sits up – looking at it we see she doesn’t want to open it. After a beat she does. She opens the cardboard box and inside are the Pointe shoes from before, inside there is a small note written by an adult. She reads
TRACY
“I hope to see you dancing in the clouds
I’ll be looking for you – David”
TRACY clutches the shoes – calmer now she lays back and shuts her eyes …..
WE FADE…
