We do ask that you schedule an appointment as the administration spends the majority of the instructional day supervising instruction. Scheduling an appointment will ensure that the administration is able to meet with you without interruption. Appointments are made for the same or the very next school day. Emergency situations will garner immediate attention.School PurposeYour child’s education and safety are our primary concerns. Please understand that all policies and procedures are designed to help meet both academic and safety expectations. We understand that they may seem inconvenient, but with the large number of students on campus organization is necessary to maintain a safe, orderly, and educationally sound environment for all of our students. We ask for your support of these policies and procedures as we strive to maintain a school in which all students have an opportunity to reach their maximum potential. Our teachers strive to create learning environments that are stimulating and focused on the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards. Students will be academically challenged and consistently encouraged to excel. The curriculum is rigorous and requires continuous student effort. We will work to provide each student with the opportunity to learn and become successful. Having high behavioral expectations of all students is a primary component of creating quality learning experiences for all students. Listed on the pages of this packet are some of our behavioral expectations and standard operating procedures designed to facilitate rigor, engagement and good order. The Liberty County Code of Conduct is the primary resource for system wide policies and consequences. The information in this handbook compliments, but does not override any of the established policies and procedures established by the Liberty County School System. Behavior ExpectationsThe success of our students is often determined by the expectation set at the beginning of the school year. Since the Liberty County Code of Conduct has established policies, such as the uniformed dress code, we feel it is imperative that students are in full compliance. In addition to providing a high quality education, we hope to establish a clear understanding in our student body that all established rules, policies, and procedures will be enforced. Listed below are some initial expectations for admittance to class and other areas of the building as well as expectations when moving throughout the building.Prompt and orderly transition to class and busses after being dismissed.Students must be dress code (page 16, LCCOC) compliant. This includes, but is not limited to:Shirt tucked inPants pulled upBlue, gold or white sweaters and sweatshirts are allowed as an accessory to the required polo shirt. These items may be removed to regulate body temperature.Coats, hats, gloves and outerwear may not be brought to class. They must be stored in a locker upon arrival to school. ID cards clearly displayed between the chin and waist at all times (when applicable).Students may not run in the building. Behavior and compliance with rules, routines and procedures will determine privileges such as Positive Choice Bucks (PCB’S) dress down days and extra-curricular activities. All staff members have general authority over students. All students will be expected to respond to reasonable requests in a polite manner. These guidelines primarily address hallway and entrance to the classroom behaviors, dress code requirements, ID requirements, etc. Behavioral expectations once in the classroom will remain high. Students should always strive to do their best work without disrupting the learning environment. Disruption to the learning environment, disrespectful behavior, and other issues that deal with non-compliance of Snelson-Golden Middle or the Liberty County School System procedures will be handled according to guidelines established in the Liberty County Code of Conduct. Serious Behavioral Infractions (Pages 37-44 LCCOC)One of our primary goals is to offer our students a quality education in an environment that is safe and orderly. Certain infractions can impact that perception and may be dealt with in a manner that follows the most severe set of consequences outlined in the Liberty County Code of Conduct. These include, but are not limited to, the possession or use of drugs on school property, being under the influence of drugs or alcohol on school property, having weapons on school property, fighting and interfering with the safe operation of the school bus. These incidents may be reported to the police and the school may pursue criminal charges. These infractions may also result in a disciplinary tribunal hearing and possible removal from school or placement in an alternative school setting. Student IncentivesAt Snelson-Golden we support and encourage students to perform well both academically and behaviorally. For this reason we have initiated several incentives designed to reward those who consistently put forth their best effort, achieve at a high academic level and behave at a specified level. Listed below are a few examples of these programs.Honor Roll – Students who meet honor roll criteria may earn special privileges and recognition. “Dress Down Days” – Periodically, students who have no discipline infractions and excellent teacher recommendations will be given an opportunity to dress down. Students who keep this status for extended periods may earn additional dress down days.Extra-curricular activities- Snelson-Golden offers activities, including spring and fall sports. Students who display good behavior and who earn good grades are eligible to participate.Student of the Month- Each month each academic team will recognize one student who has worked hard to meet academic and behavioral expectations. These students will receive a gift bag and have their picture displayed in the common area.PCB’s-Positive Choice Bucks are awarded to students who exhibit desired behaviors and promote positive behavior in school. PCB’s may be redeemed for items in the Eagle Emporium.PBIS/Capturing Kid’s Hearts (CKH)PBIS, or Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, is an evidence-based, data-driven framework proven to reduce disciplinary incidents, increase a school’s sense of safety and support improved academic outcomes.Various areas throughout the school have posters that outline expected behaviors. By following these expectations and complying with the established code of conduct, our students will experience greater success. Listed below are some common areas of campus and the behavioral expectations for each. Each academic team will discuss behaviors, classroom rules and procedures during the first few days of school and review periodically throughout the year.CafeteriaHallwaysRemain dress code compliant Move without loitering or disruptingClean your area Remain dress code compliantAccept staff instructions Walk directly to class, single file on the right sideLocker RoomsCommon AreaSecure all belongingsRemain dress code compliantFollow dress in/out guidelinesAccept staff instructionsRespect school propertyMove without loitering or disruptingRestroomsRemain dress code compliantUse the restroom assigned by the teacherRespect school propertyTo help meet the goals of PBIS, Snelson-Golden has developed a “Reflection Room.” A student who is not meeting behavioral expectations may be taken to this area of the school to meet with a counselor one-on-one. The student will then answer a series of questions designed to help him/her clearly understand the behavioral expectations and work on developing strategies designed to keep him/her from repeating the same behavior.PBIS also utilizes a “Check in/Check Out” process to support positive behaviors. This will require the student to check in and out with a teacher each day that will closely monitor his/her behavioral progress. Parents are also involved in the process and will be asked to sign the daily check sheet. CKH- () Capturing Kids' Hearts is a comprehensive relationship building program that provides tools for administrators, faculty and staff to build positive, productive, trusting relationships — among themselves and with their students and stakeholders. These processes can transform the classroom and campus environment, paving the way for high performance. LockersEach student will be assigned a locker. Students are not allowed to share lockers.A school combination lock must be purchased and the combination must be furnished to the homeroom teacher. Key locks may be approved for students who require special accommodations. A copy of the key must be given to the homeroom teacher. Students may only use the locker they are assigned. Students may only use their lockers with permission.Lockers are subject to search without warning.Students must purchase a lock before they are issued a locker. The cost of a lock is $7.00.Students participating in physical education should have an additional lock to secure their valuables in the locker room during class. No permanent lockers (in PE) are available. Locks should be removed after class. The same lock may be used every year. Most students will only have a one-time fee during their entire time (6th through 8th grade) as a student at SGMS.Hallway ExpectationsIn order to ensure a safe and orderly environment and maximize instructional time, students will be expected to follow the established guidelines for behavior in the hallway. They include:No running All students must have a pass to be in the hallway between classes. Students should not leave their classrooms without signing out and obtaining a hallway pass. When travelling in the hallway, students should take the most direct route to their assigned area. Students should not be in an area of the school other than that assigned by the pass. Being in an area of the building other than that designated will be considered and treated as skipping class. Students should only use the restroom that is nearest their classroom. Students should walk only on the right side of the hallway. The hallway is a quiet zone. Students should take great care not to disturb classes that are in session.Student transitions require students to move in a single file line on the right side of the hall.Attendance (page 25, LCCOC)School attendance tremendously impacts a student’s academic success. Students may be excused from school if they meet the criteria established in the code of conduct. Reasons include, but are not limited to: (1) personal illness and where attendance at school would endanger their health or the health of others; (2) a serious illness or death in their immediate family which would reasonably necessitate absence from school; or (3) special and recognized religious holidays according to their faith.Upon returning to school, the student must bring a written excuse signed by his/her parent or guardian stating the reason for the absence. All excuses shall be dated and brought to the school within three (3) days of the student’s absence. A student who has excessive excused or unexcused absences and/or tardies to school may be referred to the School Social Worker. Miscellaneous Information/ExpectationsParent-Teacher ConferencesParents are encouraged to meet with their child’s teacher to discuss progress. Parent teacher conferences must be scheduled with the teacher through the front office. Please call 912-877-3112 to schedule. We understand that there are times in which a parent cannot attend a scheduled conference. We ask if you are unable to keep an appointment that you call the school to cancel the conference. Teachers are also available via e-mail. Report Cards & Progress ReportsMid-term progress reports will be sent home approximately 4 ? weeks into each grading period. Report cards will be sent home once every 9 weeks for parents to sign and return. The grading scale used for all Liberty County schools is: A 90-100 B 80-89 C 70-79F below 70Parent PortalThe Liberty County School System maintains a Parent Portal. This portal allows parents/guardians to view grades from a secure on-line website at their own convenience. We invite parents/guardians to present their ID to our student services staff area to receive their user name and password. Cell Phone PolicySnelson-Golden Middle School enforces the cell phone policy adopted by the Liberty County Board of Education. It is imperative that students who choose to bring a cell phone to school take steps to ensure that the telephone is secure and powered down during he school day. Specific required behaviors associated with student cell phones are outlined in the Liberty County Code of Conduct (pages 43-44). Students who fail to follow these procedures will have their phones confiscated as outlined in the Code of Conduct. Failure to surrender a cell phone, or any personal electronic device, may result in a disciplinary action.Visitors and VolunteersWe appreciate school volunteers. Prior to volunteering, individuals must attend a volunteer training with the administration. Feel free to call the school if you wish to volunteer. Snelson-Golden welcomes parents to our school. We ask that all visitors report immediately to the front office when arriving on campus. If parents/guardians are interested in observing in classrooms, the observation must be scheduled. The procedure for requesting a classroom observation is outlined in the Liberty County Code of Conduct (pages 19-21). Bus Route ChangesStudents may only ride their assigned bus. If a parent would like to request a bus route change for less than one week, he/she may put the request in writing and have the child get the signature of a school administrator. This should be completed in the morning to give the school time to verify the note. All transportation change notes must be verified, so please include a phone number where the parent or guardian of record can be reached. If the front office is unable to verify a temporary request, the student will be required to ride his/her route home. The transportation department must approve long term and permanent route changes. Classroom Schedule ChangesMany factors are considered when creating student schedules. It is often not possible to move a student from one classroom to another when a parent requests. Certified teachers in our school have earned highly qualified credentials from the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. Our teachers have a strong understanding of the curriculum and will work to aid all children in mastering the curriculum. When a student experiences difficulty in the classroom, it is our belief that we can use researched based techniques/strategies to work through the problems. If you have concerns about your child’s progress, we ask that you first schedule a conference with the teacher to discuss the situation. If the educational problems continue, you are invited to have a conference with the teacher and an administrator. Only the Administration can make the decision to change a schedule. These changes are not initiated by parent request, but rather by the educational needs of the student. We ask that rather than requesting a teacher change, we work together to solve the problems in the current classroom.Dismissal and Early Sign-OutThe school must have written parent or guardian permission to release children to non-custodial adults. Please make sure you periodically update the information we have about who is authorized to pick up your student. We will also check the ID of anyone, including parents, when they are checking a student out of school. Student safety is an area that the Liberty County Board of Education takes very seriously. In order to increase our safety measures we will not allow students to be picked up from school by anyone not listed on the student registration card by the parent. During the school year, if you need to change the names listed on the registration card, please come to the school to make the necessary changes. There will be no exceptions made to this procedure. We are unable to process changes received by fax or phone. Anyone listed on the card must show a photo I.D before a student will be released. Student SearchesIt is imperative that school administrators be able to search items, such as book bags, lockers, lunch boxes, pockets, shoes, etc. This allows us to make sure no inappropriate or dangerous items are on campus. Please be aware that the school reserves the right to search any item brought onto school property. This is not done to interfere with your child’s privacy, but rather to ensure the safety of all children in the school. Restroom PrivilegesStudents will have ample opportunity to use the restroom. Regular restroom breaks will be scheduled to avoid interruption of the daily lesson. We will accommodate any emergency situation or documented medical condition. Teachers will also contact any parent/guardian if their student is starting to make frequent requests to leave the classroom or is abusing their restroom privilege. CHANGE OF PHONE AND/OR ADDRESSIf you change your address or telephone number at work or home, please notify the office and teacher immediately. This will allow us to contact you with information about academic and behavioral progress. We also must be able to reach you in the event that your child becomes ill or is injured while at school. ONE CALL NOWThe Liberty County School System as well as Snelson-Golden Middle School utilizes a mass communication platform to get the word out to stakeholders about important messages such as: emergency situations, meetings and opportunities to provide input. These messages will come to your telephone, text message and e-mail.
