Concert Band 2 and 3Handbook Agreement Form/SyllabusMembership in the Concert Band 2 and 3 is open to students who have completed the Concert Band 1(beginning band) course of study or equivalent, and who, through their audition, demonstrates the skill and technique required to play advanced middle school band literature. Repertoire is selected based on the strengths and weaknesses of the group. Due to the fast pace and nature of the music being studied, private lessons are strongly encouraged. If you are in Concert Band 2 and 3 you are automatically in Football Band. Performances for the Football Band include all football games, pep rallies. For more information go to the Football Band section under Band News. Concert Band 2 and 3 play at holiday and spring concerts, and MPA. All players are highly encouraged to audition for the District Honor Band/All-State Festival Band. Concert Band 2 and 3 Band members who fulfill financial, disciplinary, and academic requirements are eligible to participate in the spring trip.Students should have the following materials for this course:Instrumentinstrument cleaning kit with appropriate accessories (oil, reeds, cork grease, etc.)Reed players need a new reed every 2.5 to 3 weeks. If you do not change reeds this often you will sound like a dying animal.1-inch three ring black binderpencil holder for binder with 2 number 2 pencilsplastic page protectors2 Books - Division of Beat Book 1A and Division of Beat Book 1B (Both Concert Band 2 and 3 need each book)lyre and flip folder for use at football gamesPercussion – 6th period Concert Band 3Percussion Bell Kit with snare drum/snare pad, adjustable stands for bell kit, adjustable stands for snare drum/pad, bell mallets, snare drum sticks, carrying case(most Percussion Bell Kits come in a carrying case)2 Books – A Fresh Approach to the Snare Drum AND A Fresh Approach to the MalletsReusable corded earplugs – You can find these at any hardware stores or order them online. We will be playing indoor most of the time. To protect their hearing they must have these.Students must have their name written on all their belongings and a name tag on their instrument case.***All Materials for Concert Band 2 and 3 must be obtained NO LATER THAN AUGUST 10!Concert Band 2 and 3: All students must have an instrument by August 8 in order to remain in Band Class. This gives us ONLY a few weeks to prepare for our first Football Game performance. Anyone who will have trouble getting an instrument must contact me or set up a meeting so we can discuss options for obtaining an instrument.Instrument RentalThe Whitesburg Band has the following instruments(but limited supply) available to students for rent: French horns, baritones, tubas, oboes, bassoons, bass clarinets, tenor saxophones, baritone saxophones, and large concert percussion instruments (timpani, bass drum, concert bell, marimba, xylophone, vibraphone, cymbals, chimes, and various accessories). The rental fee for above mentioned wind instruments is $50 per semester, and the rental fee for 7-8th grade percussionists is $25 per semester. These fees help cover the costs of routine maintenance and repairs. This rental fee should be written to the Whitesburg Band Parents Association and placed in the locked Fair Share Box. Students are expected to care for these instruments as if they’d purchased them with their own money. These instruments must last not only for the current class of students, but also for those who will need them in the future. Any student who is found not caring for a school instrument properly may have it taken without refund of fees and may be asked to personally pay for any necessary repairs resulting from damage by the student. All other instruments-flutes, clarinets, alto saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and beginner percussion kits-are to be provided for the student by the student and his/her parents. Acquiring an instrument-whether purchasing or renting-should not be viewed as a financial burden, but as an investment in the education of a child. A list of recommended instruments and instrument dealers is provided by the director, and this should serve as a guideline when searching for an instrument that fits the family budget. Other instruments exist, but we strongly believe in the saying, “You get what you pay for.” A quality instrument will enable the student to achieve success and enjoyment, whereas a so-called “budget” instrument will often lead to frustration and additional repair costs. If a parent will have a problem acquiring an instrument let Mr. Hendrix know I encourage everyone to look for a USED instrument that is an approved brand from the list that will be provided. I also highly encourage parents to rent USED instruments. The fair share is determined by the Whitesburg Band Parents Association executive board through consultation with the band director regarding the activities that are planned for each year. This value changes from year to year depending on alternative sources of income including residual funds from previous year, grants, and corporate donations. The Fair Share does not include Spring Trip costs for 7th and 8th graders. Details of what the fair share covers are below... We have a variety of fundraisers including:Mouchette Enterprises(cheesecake, snacks, gifts, etc). September 28-October 19Candy Bar Fundraiser. February 1 – March 13Grading PolicyGrades, for all bands, are based on several factors. These are classroom participation (having an instrument/music every day), being at all performances (football games and concerts), in-class tests (written and playing), and evidence of at home practice (taking home instruments every day, showing progress on class music) and turning in weekly practice logs. Each assignment are weighted differently. Below is the percentage each type of assignment is worth.
