Hewitt-Trussville ends 3-game skid, drops Gardendale

by Erik Harris

For The Tribune

Hewitt-Trussville jumped out to a 26-0 halftime lead and never looked back, beating Gardendale 33-14 in a vital Class 6A, Region 6 matchup Friday at Jack Wood Stadium.

Senior quarterback Blake Bailey completed 18-of-24 passes for 283 yards and three touchdowns, and sophomore quarterback Zach Thomas rushed 18 times for 97 yards to lead the Huskies (3-5, 3-3).

"(Thomas) is a dualathlete player and he's only a sophomore so he's only going to get better," Bailey said of his younger quarterback. "That pushes me because I'm a senior and I'm getting pushed by a sophomore. That makes everyone better."

Hewitt-Trussville head coach Hal Riddle said his team played like "champions."

"We were on a threegame down spin and it's tough, it's tough to go to practice, so I'm thankful for those young people and I'm thankful for those coaches," Riddle said.

a big night from its receiving corps, led by senior Riley Stokes, who caught five passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns. Cyle Moore caught six passes for 79 yards, running back Peyton Palmer caught five passes for 55 yards and a score, and DeMarcus Kelly grabbed five passes for 49 yards.

Palmer got the scoring started for HewittTrussville, rushing 24

yards with 8:18 left in the first quarter. Bailey then hit Stokes for a 42yard touchdown to give the Huskies a 14-0 lead with 8:49 before halftime.

Bailey connected with Palmer for a 15-yard TD two minutes before halftime to go up 20-0. Bailey then found Stokes as time expired for a 35yard score.

Moore ran for a 1-yard touchdown early in the

third quarter to give Hewitt-Trussville a 33-0 advantage.

Gardendale quarterback Hunter Crook tossed a 28-yard touchdown to Gabe Hill and an 18-yard score to Davin Cameon late in the third quarter to make it a 33-14 game.

Gardendale found nine of its 10 first downs in the second half. In total, Gardendale rushed the ball for only 73 yards and threw for another 129 yards. HewittTrussville compiled 514 yards of offense.

For Hewitt-Trussville, Deontay Wilson led the team with 13 tackles and two tackles for loss. Hunter Reid notched eight tackles and three tackles for loss. Caleb Rigg had an interception and Harper Johnson broke up two passes for the Huskies.

No. 8 ClayChalkville cruises at Huntsville

by Gary Lloyd

Editor HUNTSVILLE -- Clay-Chalkville cruised to an

important Class 6A, Region 7 win over Huntsville at Milton Frank Stadium on Friday night.

Senior quarterback Hayden Moore completed 11of-17 passes for 181 yards and three touchdowns, and also rushed for a touchdown, in the No. 8 Cougars' 38-21 win over the Panthers.

"(The loss to Gadsden City) made us right," said Moore, who threw his first interception of the season against Huntsville. "We got our minds right."

Moore said the win gives Clay-Chalkville (7-1, 5-1) "great momentum" going into next week's home game against Lee-Huntsville. A Clay-Chalkville win locks up a region championship.

Clay-Chalkville senior running back Sidney Battle caught a touchdown and rushed for a touchdown against Huntsville.

Senior running back Sidney Battle rushed 14 times for 126 yards and a touchdown and also caught a touchdown pass. Junior running back Terrelle West rushed 15 times for 101 yards.

"We had to come back," Battle said of overcoming last week's loss. "This is a big win. We needed this win."

Huntsville (5-3, 4-2) got on the board first when Fred Carodine rushed eight yards to cap an eight-play, 67-yard opening drive. Moore's first passing attempt of the game was then intercepted.

Moore found T.J. Simmons late in the first quarter for a 7-yard touchdown, tying the game. Patrick Millican booted a 27-yard field goal early in the second quarter to give Clay-Chalkville a 10-7 lead.

On Clay-Chalkville's next possession, Moore found senior wideout Brian Clark on the left side. Clark sprinted down the sideline for a 70-yard score, making it a 17-7 Clay-Chalkville advantage.

Pinson Valley takes down Springville

by David Knox

For The Tribune

SPRINGVILLE ? There was plenty of star tailback Nick Gibson darting, dashing and bulldozing over tacklers, and lots of steady quarterback Brooks Garrett tossing passes to receivers Errius Collins and Dylan Evans. But the unsung warriors of Friday night were the Pinson Valley defenders, who forced five turnovers and throttled the Springville Tigers' offense most of the game in a 49-21 Class 5A, Region 6 win that clinched the Indians a playoff spot.

"The defense played good," said Pinson Valley head coach Matt

Glover. "We played really, really well in the first half. We had some busted coverages we got to fix, but besides that, it was probably one of our better all-around games."

Four of those turnovers came in the first half, when Pinson Valley (5-3, 4-2) rolled out to a 42-14 lead over the Tigers (3-5, 2-4).

Three turnovers ? two of them back-to-back late in the first quarter -- set the tone and put the Indians on their way.

Leading 7-0 after a Garrett-to-Collins connection midway in the first period, the Indians forced and recovered a fumble at the Tigers 42. A 15-yard pass from Garrett to the multipurpose Gibson and a 36-

yard scramble eventually set up a 4-yard rush by Gibson from the Seminole formation with 1:20 left in the first period.

It didn't take long for

the defense to set up two more scores.

On the next Springville possession, DaVonte Perkins knocked the ball loose from a Tiger

and recovered it himself at the 1. Gibson leaped into the end zone and Saul Rios added his third extra point as the lead grew to 21-0.

On the next series, Elijah Bibbs picked off a Tigers pass and rumbled to the 21. A late hit out of bounds put the ball on the 10, and Gibson shredded through for another TD on the final play of the quarter. Rios' PAT made it 28-0, and a foregone conclusion.

Before the half, Garrett added another scoring pass to Collins and bulled in himself from the 1 with just 16 seconds before the break. Springville countered with two big plays: a 76-yard run by William Foster and an 87-yard kickoff return by Brandon Felder.

In the third quarter, Springville scored again on a 48-yard pass from

Friday Feature: Pinson, Moody vie for No. 2 seed

by Gary Lloyd

Editor

This one has major Class 5A playoff implications.

Pinson Valley vs. Moody at Willie Adams Stadium on Friday will determine who locks up the No. 2 seed in Class 5A, Region 6. That team will host Class 5A, Region 8 No. 3 seed Hartselle in the first round of the playoffs next month.

The loser will be the Class 5A, Region 6 No. 3 seed and travel to either Muscle Shoals or Cullman for the first round of the playoffs.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Pinson Valley (5-3, 4-2) and Moody (6-2, 4-2) have both lost to Walker and Center Point in the region. Walker is ineligible for the Class

5A playoffs as a result of a coaches' brawl with Cullman earlier this season. Center Point is the

region's top seed. The Indians have won

two straight games by a 123-21 margin after one

of their worst performances in recent memory at Center Point on Oct. 4. Junior running

back Nick Gibson has rushed for 388 yards and seven touchdowns in the last two games. Senior

quarterback Brooks Garrett threw the ball well at Springville last week, tossing three touchdown passes.

Moody, where Pinson Valley head coach Matt Glover used to coach, has won four consecutive games, with an average margin of victory of 47-21.5. Moody has scored at least 35 points in all six of its wins this season.

Pinson Valley's defense has played very well in its last two games, and slowing the productive Moody offense will be key. Pinson Valley could go score for score, but Glover would prefer a solid defensive game from his team.

HTHS Lacrosse Club officially formed

by Gary Lloyd

Editor

Jamey Curlee believes he has created a monster.

Curlee set up a booth when school started in August, with a sign that simply read "Lacrosse Signups." Curlee, a Hewitt-Trussville High School teacher who has coached nearly every sport at the school, expected maybe five boys to sign up.

But 32 boys signed up, as well as 12 girls.

Last month, there were 72 high school boys and 17 or 18 girls who had signed up to play the club sport, which is not sanctioned by the Alabama High School Athletic Association. Yet. Curlee believes that will happen in the next few years.

The Trussville City Board of Education on Monday approved the Hewitt-Trussville High School Lacrosse Club, a move school officials believe puts the high school out in front of the likely future approval as

an AHSAA-sanctioned

sport.

"We're

excited,"

Curlee said.

Hewitt-Trussville

High School will play

in the Greater Birming-

ham Youth Lacrosse

Association, competing

beginning in February

in the association's Divi-

sion II, which includes

teams from Homewood,

Altamont, Briarwood,

Magic City, Prattville,

Auburn and Huntsville.

Division I includes more

experienced lacrosse

teams, such as Hoover,

Spain Park, Mountain Brook and Vestavia Hills.

Curlee will coach the Hewitt-Trussville varsity boys, and his wife will coach the girls. Curlee has stepped away from being the varsity girls golf coach to coach lacrosse. Leah Burke fills that position for the 2014 season.

Curlee said the interest in lacrosse is strong. On Sunday, 36 boys and 16 girls showed up at The Mall to practice, something Curlee deemed a

"wonderful surprise." Curlee said practices could take place on the high school's band field or at the Trussville Sports Complex's youth football field. Games could be played on that football field or at Jack Wood Stadium.

Boys' lacrosse will be 10-on-10 with contact rivaling that of football, and girls' lacrosse is a no-contact, 12-on-12 sport, Curlee said.

Curlee said Trussville Lacrosse started two years ago with U11

and U13 teams. There weren't enough players for a U15 team last year, so his sons -- who enjoy lacrosse -- had to play in Mountain Brook. Curlee said he is glad that Trussville can now offer the sport that is rising in popularity.

"It's exciting to be a part of it and ride this wave," he said.

Inaugural BOOsketball

camp at HT Monday

by Gary Lloyd

Editor

Miami Heat star LeBron James could be there, as could Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant.

But, so could a witch or two, a few vampires and some superheroes.

And they're all playing basketball.

The inaugural HewittTrussville High School BOOsketball Camp is

scheduled for Monday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Hewitt-Trussville High School's Bryant Bank Arena.

The two-hour clinic will consist of passing, dribbling, shooting, defense and teamwork drills with a Halloween twist. Each drill will have a trick-or-treat theme to go along with it.

Campers should wear their favorite Halloween costume -- keeping in mind it is a basketball

camp -- and basketball shoes. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes and competition winners.

The camp is for players in the first through sixth grades. The cost is $25. Those interested in participating should preregister by emailing huskieswbb@.

NorthPark associate pastor to lead Clay youth wrestling

by Gary Lloyd

NorthPark Baptist Church Associate pastor Stephen Hall has taken over as head coach for the Clay Youth Wrestling program, according to Director Jason LeSueur.

LeSueur said Hall was a two-time state champion wrestler at Pinson Valley High School.

"Coach Hall plans to teach the boys the sport of wrestling while also showing them how to develop character, leadership and ethics through the word of Christ," LeSueur said.

Former college wrestler and Pennsylvania native Bob Bernd will serve as assistant head coach. Clay Youth Wrestling has members from Clay, Pinson, Trussville

and other nearby communities.

PINSON continued from page B-1

Alex Conwell to Jalen Ramsey to cut it to 4221, but the Indians responded with another score as Garrett found Evans with a 17-yard TD pass with 8:13 in the third quarter.

From there, Pinson Valley turned it over to Gibson and the running game to grind down the

clock. He finished with 223 yards on 29 carries.

"I thought the offense did well," Glover said. "Executed when we needed to. Brooks threw the ball well. He's going to have to throw the ball from here on for us to have a chance."

Gibson was happy with the yards and his

three scores, but pointed his fingers to the defense in providing the opportunities and his offensive teammates.

"The yards and everything mean a lot to me, but every time I get 100 yards or score a touchdown, I just give the credit to my o-line," he said.

Cougars look to lock up region Friday

by Gary Lloyd

Editor

Friday should be a celebratory night at ClayChalkville.

The Cougars host LeeHuntsville in the teams' final Class 6A, Region 7 game of the season at 7 p.m. at Cougar Stadium.

Clay-Chalkville (71, 5-1) can lock up the regular season region championship if it gets by Lee-Huntsville (2-6, 1-5). It would be ClayChalkville's second straight region championship. It won it in 2011 but forfeited nine wins due to playing an ineligible player.

The Cougars should have little trouble doing so. Lee-Huntsville has surrendered 41 points per game in region contests and scored just 14 per game in those six games. Clay-Chalkville is one of the top offenses

Charles Hicklen scored on an 11-yard keeper with 3:29 left until halftime. The Cougars answered right back, though, pushing the lead to 24-14 when Moore kept for a 25-yard touchdown run.

A quick three-and-out highlighted by Johnathan Daniel and P.J. Walcott sacks gave ClayChalkville enough time to score again before the half. Moore hit Battle for

a 19-yard score with :34 left until halftime, putting Clay-Chalkville up 31-14.

Hicklen found Justin Jones for a 9-yard score on Huntsville's first possession of the third quarter to make it a 31-21 game. Battle scored on a 1-yard run on the Cougars' next possession to make it 38-21.

Clay-Chalkville head coach Jerry Hood said

a "tough, hard" week of practice helped ClayChalkville get the win.

"I am so proud of our defense," Hood said. "I thought our offense was solid for most of the game. We got the job done. I'm proud of them."

Another `must win' game for Hewitt-Trussville tonight

by Gary Lloyd

Editor

Hewitt-Trussville head coach Hal Riddle said it's "definitely a must win for us" against Huffman tonight.

And he's right, because the playoff scenarios are confusing. Vestavia Hills is at the top of Class 6A, Region 6 with a 6-0 record. Shades Valley is 5-1, its lone loss to Vestavia Hills. Those two teams have secured playoff spots.

And here's the confusion. Mountain Brook is 4-2 in the region with losses to Shades Valley and Gardendale. The Spartans host Vestavia Hills on Friday. Hewitt-Trussville and Gardendale both hold 3-3 region records. Hewitt-Trussville has lost to Vestavia Hills, Shades Valley and Mountain Brook. Gardendale has lost to

If Mountain Brook beats kies could get into the playoffs Birmingham.

If Mountain Brook loses to Vestavia and Gardendale loses one of its last two games -- to Carver or Buckhorn -- HewittTrussville could slide into the fourth playoff spot.

Of course, if Hewitt-Trussville wins tonight and Gardendale loses Friday, the Huskies would be sitting well for the final playoff spot from Class 6A, Region 6.

If Mountain Brook loses and Hewitt-Trussville and Gardendale both win, a three-way tie for third place in the region will happen and tiebreakers will likely come into play.

The immediate focus for Hewitt-Trussville, though, is beating Huffman. Kickoff at Lawson Field is set for 7 p.m.
