From the Principal

By Jay Salter, Principal, Galena High School

5 suggestions from Mr. Salter for Parents to help their students be successful during Hybrid and Full Distance Learning:

1. Check your student's Infinite Campus grades, or Edgenuity progress, at least once every two weeks. While some of our programs use a Mastery Based grading system and you might not see grades posted every two weeks, or Edgenuity grades posted, there are classes that post grades weekly, and some daily. Recognizing attendance and academic issues early on, can lead to a quick resolution.

2. In the Hybrid or Full Distance Learning Model, there is work to be completed and submitted every day. As an Administrative Team, we monitor the assignments/meeting notices/expectations given by teachers, and I can tell you that in some cases students aren't completing what they need to complete on a daily basis. Make sure they are completing assignments every day. Also, they can reach out to their teachers, or support teachers for Edgenuity students, every day, not just the days they are in person. Virtual office hours for teachers are from 2:45-3:15 or by appointment.

3. Make sure your student is attending the virtual meetings/lessons for the classes. We heard from families that they wanted our teachers to conduct live Teams and Zoom meetings, and so the teachers continue to grow in developing these opportunities for students. However, many times when I go in to observe the meetings or lessons, there are many students absent, some who have just turned off their camera and muted their microphone and simply walked away. We know this because the teacher asks questions and receives no response. In fact, I've had parent calls regarding teachers not having meetings/lessons live only to find that the student didn't attend the meeting, but went in to mark "here" in the Attendance channel and then left.

4. Reach out to your student's teachers directly and request a parent/teacher conference if there is something your student needs from the teacher. Teachers are willing and able to meet via Teams or Zoom with parents, but oftentimes parents go directly to administrators when the issue can easily be resolved between the parties directly involved much more quickly and easily. If you would like to meet with all your student's teachers, contact the Counselor to help coordinate a larger meeting with multiple schedules.

5. Keep your student on a schedule. For Hybrid students: Class times do not change and students are required to attend at the appropriate time according to the daily schedule, whether in-person or remote, or Distance Learning. That includes attendance, meetings, lessons, group work, etc. For Full Distance Learning: If you would like to follow the AA/BB schedule then do so, or if you need a more creative/adaptive schedule, then contact Mr. Culpepper for some advice on how to set a schedule that works for you.

Dollars for Scholars On-Line Auction

Although it was not possible to conduct the annual Fall Social to raise money for the Dollars for Scholars program, planning is underway for an online auction fundraiser later this year .

About Dollars for Scholars

Each year a scholarship committee consisting of Galena High School faculty and two members of the Five-Star Boosters organization who do not have senior students is formed to award scholarships to seniors who are attending an institution of higher education. For each of the last couple of years, Dollars for Scholars has awarded approximately 60 individual one-time scholarship awards to deserving seniors. Historically, the Five -Star Boosters organization has contributed funding for 25 scholarships each year.

Help Needed

The pandemic has made it difficult for our seniors to plan for college, and it has made fundraising for their scholarships difficult as well, Anyone who is able and willing to assist in obtaining silent auction items or in providing or collecting monetary donations for the Dollars for Scholars program, please contact Rick Combs at 685-3652.

H

ello Grizzly Families!

The Galena Counseling Department is using an alphabet (last name) model for the 2020-21 school year. Parents and students are encouraged to email the appropriate counselor listed below regarding any question or concern. Because our students have limited in person instruction this year due to the pandemic, counselors will not be individually meeting with seniors or presenting classroom guidance with the other grade levels. Seniors may contact their counselor if they would like a copy of their grad plan. Students are always welcome and encouraged to email their counselor with any questions. Counselors are also available during nutrition and lunch for appointments (or before/after school by appointment). **If you have any questions or concerns regarding your student's spring schedule of classes, or would like to make any changes, please contact your student's counselor directly. Please note that if your student's schedule says "see counselor" for the spring semester for any period, we are aware that there is a 'missing' class and we are working to address that gap before classes begin in January. At this time, we are working on developing a viable plan for doing our in-house registration for the 2021-22 school year. Please stay tuned for more information and we appreciate your patience!

We encourage all students and parents to visit the Galena counseling webpage for comprehensive information for every grade level. There are links on the right-hand side of the webpage for all grade levels related to general high school planning, college planning, and for the senior year much more detailed information related to college admissions, financial aid, and other related information and deadlines. The Galena College and Career Center website is also an amazing resource for all our students in all aspects of their college and career planning efforts! Check out the College and Career Center website at GHS () to learn more. Interested in the Military, Trade/Vocational Schools, meeting Admissions Counselors, learning about FAFSA, or finding a job? Find it all there. All seniors, including distance learning students, have access to the GHS Class of 2021 Teams class where important information regarding Scholarships, Financial Aid, FAFSA, College Visits, workshops and much more is posted daily. Make sure you turn on your notifications, so you don't miss out on any upcoming deadlines or events! There are videos and PowerPoint presentations to help you navigate website links and information regarding Financial Aid, TMCC, University of Nevada Reno, Out of State Schools, FAFSA, the Millennium Scholarship and the Nevada Promise Scholarship. If you have any questions, please email Ms. Applebach at sapplebach@. Thank you and it's good to be a Grizzly!

H ello from the Career Center, This month I have been busy updating scholarships for students to review and apply. All scholarships are listed on the Career Center website at . Remember the ones listed in RED are our local ones and I highly encourage students to apply for those first. Many more will be posted over the next few months so please check your Teams Class or the website and don't miss out on the opportunity to earn money to help offset the cost of continuing your education. There are many vocational scholarships available too. Our in-house Galena General Scholarship is now open. The deadline is Friday, February 19, 2021. I encourage all seniors to apply. You can obtain the scholarship application on the Career Center Website.

If you have been accepted to the University of Nevada, Reno please make sure to activate your MyNevada account and begin submitting documents on your to-do-list. In addition, the in-house scholarship application is open, and I encourage you to apply early. The deadline is February 15, 2021. You will need to submit your FAFSA application prior to the deadline to be eligible. FAFSA is still open and there are many virtual workshops as well as individual appointments available to help assist you in applying. Most colleges will be sending out acceptance letters in the next few months as well as mailing out their financial aid packages, so please submit your FAFSA as soon as possible.

Are you interested in taking some college classes while attending high school? The Jump Start Program is enrolling students now as well as the Manufacturing Workforce Initiative program through TMCC. This is an opportunity for students to take classes in manufacturing while earning college and high school credits. You can complete these classes and obtain an industry recognized credential, a Skills Certificate. Once the courses are completed, you are guaranteed an interview with Tesla. You must be a junior or senior and have a 2.0GPA or higher to be eligible. Thanks to a specialized grant, these classes are FREE! It is a great program for students considering working after high school or attending vocational classes versus a traditional 2/4 year college. For more information please email or come see me in the Career Center.

The ACT is scheduled for Juniors to take on February 23, 2021. For those interested in a prep class, there will be an online bootcamp hosted by Tutor's Across America on 1/22-1/24. Students can sign up to receive tips and strategies on how to take the test. Postcards and flyers are available in the Career Center.

I hope you have a restful and safe holiday season, and please reach out with any questions.

Ms. Applebach

Attendance: PARENTS we need your help with your child's attendance! Our attendance data is showing a significant increase of students who fall under the Severely Chronic Absenteeism category, with a number of 317 students. Severe Chronic Absenteeism is defined as the student missing 20% or more of the classes. Additionally, we have 212 students in the Chronic Absenteeism category, which is students missing 10% - 19.99% of their classes. Students who are learning remotely are still required to be present for school during the day. Students need to log into their classes within the first few minutes of class starting.

Parents please use Infinite Campus to check your student's attendance. For the Full Distance Learning parents, you may contact your student's counselor and request access to Edgenuity to check your student's progress and attendance.

Technology: For students still needing laptops to do their distance learning assignments from a teacher or on Edgenuity, contact the school to request a laptop and express the need for a hot spot for internet connection. If you move schools or move, please make sure to return the laptops to the school.

Fall Semester Finals: Math District Common Finals will be administered for Algebra 1, Geometry, Formal Geometry, Algebra 2, and Algebra 2 Honors.
