JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Communication Specialist Status: Exempt

Reports to: Chief Human Resources, Student Services Terms: 226 days

& Communications Officer

Pay Grade: Admin. Pay Grade 4 Salary Range: $60,459 - $75,574

Position Requirements:

Promote positive public relations between the school district and community. Prepare and provide information to the public about the activities and goals of the school district. Distribute pertinent information about the district and its activities to employees and community through the District Date Book, Weekly Wave, Website and GISD Channel 17 TV.

Education/Certification/License:

Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, or a related field

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Demonstrated skills in writing, editing, and public speaking

Thorough knowledge of media relations and public relations functions

Ability to use personal computer to design and produce district publications

Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral forms with all levels of management, both internal and external to the district

Ability to maintain accurate and auditable records

Ability to meet established deadlines

Experience:

Five years experience in journalism, communication and desktop publishing

School district communication experience, preferred

Duties/Responsibilities:

1. Provide copy for brochures and publications for the Public Information Office

2. Serve as the information liaison between the school district and the community, as well as, coordinate media coverage including preparing press releases and publishing articles and photos in local media and other publications

3. Take photographs for district publications, presentation, and displays. Record meetings or programs (both video and audio) throughout the district

4. Develop and publicize reports related to the performance of the district and articulate district goals and objectives

5. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy in the public information area

6. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, correspondence, publications mailing lists and other documents as required

7. Answer incoming calls and respond to routine inquiries from public, media, board of trustees, and staff as directed. Refer non-routine inquires to the Chief Human Resources, Student Services & Communications Officer

8. Maintain a log of media calls and information requests

9. Assist school personnel in publicizing and promoting any performances, exhibitions, displays, or special programs sponsored by the schools increasing media coverage by show-casing each campus/department

10. Design, prepare, and edit district publications including newsletters, recruitment brochures, programs for special events, and other publications

11. Direct and manage videos including updating content on GISD-TV, Channel 17 on a bi-weekly basis

12. Supervise the organization of district press clipping files

13. Stay abreast of developing communication trends and techniques

14. Demonstrate awareness of district-community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs

15. Compile cost estimates based on documented program needs at s it pertains to the budget

16. Prepare and distribute yearly school calendars

17. Build, maintain and support all district Websites

18. Utilize the broadcasting facilities at BHS and Weis to promote student involvement on GISD-TV

19. Supervise monthly meetings with campus representatives to assure campus sites are accurate and current

20. Oversee and implement the GISD Marketing and Revenue Generating Plan established in 2013

21. Perform other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor which may occur outside the regular school day or the regular school year

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals; 35mm camera(s), video cameras; desktop publishing software including TV channel Network

Posture: Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions including frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching

Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)

Environment: May work prolonged or irregular house including evenings and weekends

Mental Demands: work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
