MVHS Baseball - Mounds View Public Schools

MVHS Baseball - Early Dismissal Approach - 2021

Background

• What follows is how we will approach 2021. What is unique in 2021:

o In-school learning is Monday-Thursday beginning March 29. No in-school learning on Friday – students are home.

o Some students are opting for Distance Learning – they are home Monday-Friday.

o With no students in school on Fridays, no early dismissal is required. All 4 teams are scheduled for games each Friday.

o Teachers stop teaching at 2:45PM each day Monday-Thursday. Students are free to leave class at 2:45PM.

o Covid: Normally we want players to ride the Bus to Away Games for team unity, camaraderie and chemistry. Riding the Bus obviously creates increased Covid risk, and we respect a decision to have players drive (be driven) to/from games instead of riding the Bus. Parents fill out the Alternate Transportation Form for this.

• The “Daily Run” Bus that shuttles students between Mounds View HS, Chippewa MS, Rice Creek (Softball) and McCullough (Baseball – FR and B) will depart from Mounds View HS at 3:00PM Monday-Thursday. There is no Daily Run Bus on Fridays. A Bus does NOT return baseball players from McCullough to MVHS – parents must pick them up following practice/games.

• There are 20 total games for each team; roughly 10 home and 10 away for each team.

• Game Times: The SEC determines start times. There is flexibility for circumstances like playing at Forest Lake’s Schumacher Park under the lights if both teams agree.

o Freshman, B, and JV games start at 4:15PM.

o Varsity games begin at 4:30PM.

• Pregame: We ideally want a 1 hour pregame routine of warm-up, throwing, fundamentals, and fielding in-out. A 3:00PM departure for away games will get us “on-time” to most games; and a little “late,” but manageable, for some locations like Woodbury, Park and East Ridge (Varsity will depart at 2:45PM for these schools).

Approach

• The objective is to balance the desire to:

• Provide for a pre-game timeframe that isn’t rushed, provide warm-up to properly prepare for a game, and provide for a positive experience for players.

• Provide for minimizing missed class time as much as possible through Player flexibility to stay in class as appropriate beyond the early dismissal time.

• Provide for reasonably consistent dismissal times. Strive for minimizing potential confusion for players, coaches, and the end of the day teacher(s).

• On days students are excused from school early, players/parents have permission to extend their time in class they deem appropriate and necessary.

o If this causes them to miss the Bus or pre-game hitting at MVHS, that is OK - the student/parent will drive them to the game if they miss the Bus.

o The coaching staff expects this to occur, understands the need for it, and will work with it!

• Shrinking the pre-game time most affects the opportunity for batting practice. As we all know, this is what the players generally like and want to do the most. If they extend their time in school beyond the early release timeframe, and it causes them to miss batting practice, so be it, they can still have success hitting in a game! This will be a message that the coaches will emphasize with the players.

• We don’t want students dropping classes to accommodate baseball. The situation we have with Late Start and afternoon game times is what it is, and we will work with it.

• Planning, Communication and Flexibility is required.

o We will provide students with a form that explains the situation – they will provide this to their end of the school day teacher(s).

o Teacher and MV Baseball Coach Scott Oberg will be an Academic liaison with the Teachers; periodically checking in with them to see how it is going and help address any issues.

o Students are expected to communicate well ahead of time with their end of the school day teacher(s) regarding this situation, for developing a plan with their teacher for dealing with it, and for maintaining ongoing discussion about how it is going.

o Coach Downey will provide the Attendance Secretary with an email each evening with early dismissals for all teams for the next day’s games. She passes this on to Teachers first thing in the morning the day of the game.

o Effective communication and flexibility between students, parents, teachers and coaches is required in order to effectively handle the situation.

Specific Plan – Early Dismissal For Games

Freshman Team

• Home Games: No Early Dismissal (Teaching done at 2:45PM).

• MVHS Daily Run Bus Departs at 3:00PM Monday-Thursday for those riding it.

• Team meets at McCullough at 3:15PM.

• BP at McCullough.

• Away Games: Players released at 2:15PM.

• BP in MVHS Cages.

• Distance Learners and All Players on Fridays: Are driven to MVHS for BP (or they can choose to miss BP and drive directly to Away Field if they are not riding the Bus).

• Bus and Parents driving Players depart MVHS at 3:00PM.

• Team meets at the away field by 3:30PM.

B Team

• Distance Learners and All Players on Fridays: Players are driven directly to McCullough (or can get themselves to MVHS to catch the 3:00PM Daily Run Bus Monday-Thursday if that is more convenient).

• Team meets at the away field by 3:30PM.

Specific Plan – Early Dismissal For Games (Cont’d)

JV

• Home Games: No Early Dismissal (Teaching done at 2:45PM).

• BP in MVHS Cages.

• Distance Learners and All Players on Fridays: Players drive to MVHS.

• At the Field by 3:20 to prep field and Pre-Game.

• Away Games: Players released at 2:15PM.

• BP in MVHS Cages.

• Distance Learners and All Players on Fridays: Drive to MVHS for BP (or they can choose to miss BP and drive directly to Away Field if they are not riding the Bus).

• Bus and Players driving depart MVHS at 3:00PM.

• Team meets at the away field by 3:30PM.

Varsity

• Home Games: Players released at 2:00PM.

• Players meet at the field by 2:20PM for field prep and on-field BP from 2:30PM – 3:30PM. Players at home may not be able to be at the field by 2:20PM, and that is OK.

• Away Games: Players released at 2:00PM.

• BP in MVHS Cages.

• Players at home drive to MVHS for BP.

• Bus and Players driving themselves depart MVHS at 3:00PM (2:45PM for some locations).

Again, all players, can remain in class beyond the Early Dismissal time as appropriate.

This is obviously significant missed class time for Varsity, but it is what it is if we are to provide a meaningful pre-game Varsity Baseball experience for the players (e.g. on-field BP for home games). There are 2 away night games for Varsity in 2021 - Early dismissal will not be necessary for these games.

The bottom line is if this doesn’t work, we will make adjustments.
