Dear Parent/Guardian,

The Garland ISD African American Advisory Committee invites you to attend the GISD Parental Empowerment through the Academy of Knowledge. This one-day event is designed to empower parents and guardians by providing knowledge about GISD, state testing, preparing students for college and employment, and share many educational resources. This event is the first in several community events designed to contact more parents and share important information and changes in the Texas educational system. Community members from Garland, Rowlett, and Sachse will help facilitate this event. GISD staff will conduct training on how to access and utilize resources available to parents from various sources.[1] There is no charge for registration, transportation[2], or meals. A light breakfast will be provided in the morning as well as lunch at noon.

Description This academy will help parents or guardians of African American children, who attend GISD schools, to help their children do better in school, on TAKS and other standardized tests, so that their children can meet the Texas curriculum and graduation requirements in four years and begin planning for college or employment.

Opening Assembly

This assembly will allow parents to begin the communication process with GISD staff and community members from Garland, Rowlett, and Sachse and receive tips on how to get the most out of this event.

Portrait of a Graduate

Garland Independent School District’s Portrait of a Graduate is a collection of information from a variety of sources: district-wide educational committees, community partnerships, parent meetings, Campus Improvement Teams, staff meetings, and individual interviews. Its purpose is to give our stakeholders vision and guidance in setting educational goals.

Session 1 Blue

This session is designed to teach parents how to use the GISD grade book as a tool to monitor their child’s academic progress, how to set alerts in the system that will notify you of averages, grades and much more. Parents will learn about the GISD/school(s) and Texas Education Agency websites. Access all of this through the Garland, Rowlett and Sachse Public Libraries.

Session 2 Green

Parents will have the opportunity to learn “who is who” in GISD, who to talk to about any resource or issue related to the education of their children, and how to go about contacting staff members.

Information about GISD, Texas and how GISD measures up.

Session 3 Red

In this session, parents will have an opportunity to hear from African American Advisory Committee members. There will be a discussion of parents’ rights and responsibilities. Committee members will share ways to get involved on school campuses and in the district. Parents may ask questions, and provide information or feedback about areas in which they would like to receive more information, resources, or communication within GISD.

Closing Assembly

This assembly provides parents with an opportunity to register for educational resources, future information sessions such as GISD, classes that can help you learn skills to help your children do well in classes, the college application process and financial aid, continuing education classes and more.
