Frequently asked questions - Revision

Frequently asked questions – Revising Mathematics

1. When will the exams take place?

• All sets summer 2019

2. How long will the exams be?

All papers are 1 hour and 30 minutes

3. What will the exams look like?

• Up to 28 questions per paper.

• Students should expect maths questions with very little structure – problem solving.

• Quality of written communication, reasoning and showing clear working is very important.

4. When should students begin revising?

• We recommend students start revision for GCSE maths exams 6 to 8 weeks before the exam.

• The amount of revision should gradually increase as they get closer to the exam.

5. What are the best revision activities?

• Using exam papers alongside a revision guide and the internet. Papers should be marked either by taking to members of staff or using mark schemes at home.

• Ensure they can use all equipment appropriately – Can they use the fractions button on their calculator? Can they draw a circle with their compass? Can they measure angles with their protractor?

• Students should keep notes of questions they struggle on and list the relative topics; this should then be their revision focus. Too many students want to practice the questions they can do and avoid the harder questions that they cannot do.

• Reading through exercise books generally does not work for maths
