YR8: GEOGRAPHY OF DISEASE HOMEWORK PROJECT

[INDEPENDENT ENQUIRER]

Given out: 28th January 2019 Handed in: 15th February 2019

Expected duration of project: 3 weeks/ 12 hours

Unit of study: Geography of Disease

Title: Which disease presents the greatest threat to the world today?

Outcomes of learning

Students will have learned about the global distribution of a range of diseases and evaluated the threat they pose to society both locally and globally. To demonstrate their understanding students are required to research and discuss the hypothesis:

Malaria is the most threatening disease in the world today.

To complete the project, students will need to:

• Research and evaluate a range of websites and explore their thoughts about this hypothesis and whether they agree with it or not.

• Compare the threat posed by Malaria with other diseases of their choice.

• Choose the diseases that they have ranked as the most threatening and compare them to the threat posed by Malaria

• Present their findings as a written report, wall display, Powerpoint, movie, or in a combination of these.

This work enables you to reach the following levels

WEEK ONE: Task 1 - Background research

Title: Which disease presents the greatest threat to the world today?

Here is a list of useful websites to help you with you research.

Remember to record a list of the diseases you’ve researched [SEE TASK 2]; including the web address, who created it, when it was last updated and when you accessed the information for each website.

This is by no means a complete list so please find your own information as well

Introductory websites

Malaria

Other diseases

Maps and graphs

WEEK ONE: Task 2 - Ranking the most threatening diseases

From your list choose at least 3 diseases, of which Malaria must be one, which you think pose the greatest threat to people around the world to complete some more detailed research on. Remember you can use the websites on page 12 as a start but try to find your own information as well.

Once you have collected the information you must put the diseases you have studied in order of the threat that they present to the population. To rank: 1 = most threatening.

|Disease |Cause |Symptoms |Treatment |Location |Number of people |Number of deaths caused by|Rank |

WEEK TWO: Task 3 - What have we found out?

We have done a lot of background research into different diseases where they can be found and which you think are the most threatening. Now we must present our findings.

You have a choice of how you present your findings. You may:

1. Write a written report.

2. Create a wall display with maps, graphs, pictures, and writing

3. Create a powerpoint presentation

4. Make a movie ….. Or a combination of these

Look on page 6 to remind yourself of how you will be assessed.

Look on page 9 to remind yourself of the keywords you should use in your work.

Don’t forget to use maps, graphs and pictures in your work.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your work should cover the following:

Write the title - Which disease presents the greatest threat to the world today?

Introduction - What are we trying to find out in this piece of work?

How have you collected your information?

What is the hypothesis?

What are you trying to prove in this piece of work?

Paragraph 2 - What is Malaria? - Describe the type of disease.

Describe the symptoms of the disease.

Describe and explain the global distribution of the disease.

Which countries have the most sufferers of Malaria - Why?

Which countries have the most deaths from Malaria - Why?

Explain why Malaria needs to be tackled

Explain how Malaria could be prevented from spreading.

Describe how Malaria can be treated.

Paragraph 3 - What other diseases present a threat?

Use the same structure as above for your chosen diseases. E.g. Cholera?

Paragraph 4 - What are the similarities between your chosen disease(s) and Malaria?

E.g. where they are found?

Reasons for the diseases spreading

Problems with preventing the spread of the diseases?

Does the wealth of a country affect your findings?

Does the number of people living in towns and cities affect your findings?

Paragraph 5 What are the differences between your chosen disease(s) and Malaria?

E.g. Where they are found?

Public knowledge of the disease

How easy the disease is to treat

The reasons that the disease is not being treated

Conclusion Is Malaria the most threatening disease? What have you found out?

Have you proved or disproved the hypothesis?

What might happen in the future with regards to the spread of disease?

Is the threat from different diseases likely to be more or less?

What effect will climate change have on the spread of disease?

NEED MORE HELP? WHY NOT USE THE WRITING FRAME ON THE FOLLOWING PAGE.

Extra help – Why not use the writing frame below?

Which disease presents the greatest threat to the world today?

Introduction:

In this enquiry I will be discussing the threat posed by different diseases. I will be testing the hypothesis: _____________________________________________

I will test this hypothesis by completing background research, looking at maps and graphs and deciding what information is useful and relevant to me in order to answer the enquiry question. I will be exploring information on where different diseases are found, the number of people infected with a disease, the number of deaths from disease and the causes, symptoms and treatment of my chosen diseases.

Finally, I will discuss any factors which might make diseases more of a threat in some parts of the world than others. For example, poverty, urbanisation and climate change.

The disease(s) I have chosen to compare and contrast with Malaria is/are: ________________________________________________________________

I have chosen to compare these diseases with Malaria because _____________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

What are the causes and effects of Malaria?:

Malaria is…. (Describe the type of disease)

The symptoms of Malaria are….

Malaria can be found… (Describe and explain the where in the world Malaria can be found. A map may be useful here)

How many people suffer from Malaria? Think about where in the world the people with Malaria live.

How many people die from Malaria each year? Where do most of the deaths occur?

It is important to try and prevent the spread of Malaria because…

The spread of Malaria could be prevented by…

Is it possible to treat Malaria?

What are the causes and effects of other major diseases?

Use a similar structure as above to discuss what you have found out about your other chosen diseases.

E.g. Cholera is… (describe the type of disease)

etc

How does Malaria compare to other diseases?

The ways in which Malaria is similar to …(your chosen diseases) are:

The ways in which Malaria differs from …(your chosen diseases) are:

Conclusion: Is Malaria the most threatening disease in the World today?

In conclusion I have found that Malaria (is/is not) the most threatening disease in the world today because …

WEEK THREE [EXTENSION TASK A – LEVEL 6]:

Mapping disease

For the diseases listed in the table IN TASK 2, can you find out which countries they are most common in? Use the websites below to try and find maps to help you.

(for geographic coverage box enter ‘World’)

Copy and paste (you may need to use the print screen function) one map for each disease and label it with the following:

3 Countries where disease is most common

3 Countries where disease is least common

Wealth of each country (Use find the country. Click on Economy find the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita for that country. This is an average that shows how much money there is in the countries economy per person)

Life expectancy of each country (Use find the country. Click on People and find life expectancy)

Add any other information that you feel is relevant.

For example: Map of Malaria cases

Do you notice any patterns? Are there any links between wealth, life expectancy and disease?

WEEK THREE [EXTENSION TASK B – LEVEL 7]:

Links between disease and wealth

For those that want to stretch themselves and find a few more links between disease and well pretty much anything then this site is amazing. It might take a little while to master but it really is very interesting.

Go to click on Gapminder World. You will open a page, part of which you can see below. Basically have a play and see what happens. You may be able to identify some links that you can use to prove or disprove the hypothesis. You will need to use the print screen button if you want to print anything from this site. You may want to press the full screen option also.

The graph you can see below shows the relationship between GDP (wealth) and life expectancy. As you can see, the less wealthy a country is the lower its life expectancy. The colours relate to different countries and the size of the circle relates to the size of the countries population.

By pressing play you can see what happens to the relationship through time. You can change lots of different things on this graph to help you prove or disprove the hypothesis.

Try clicking on the Y axis where it says Life expectancy - You will see a list of options. One of which is health - Perhaps you could change it to one of those and see what happens. Some things show better patterns and links than others.

Have a play and see what you think.

WEEK 3: TASK 4 - SWOT analysis

In all subjects, to be able to evaluate is really important, if you are going to improve as a leaner and always achieve high marks. Now use the notes you have made to write 4 paragraphs evaluating your work.
