This workshop will introduce, review and evaluate the key elements of best practices for administering the GED Test. Get acquainted with gathering the required data that will improve your program. Get connected with your peers and walk away with ideas that will deliver greater success for you, your programs and your customers.

Ruby Payne Training –A Framework for Understanding Poverty

June 8, 2004, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (Pre-registration is required.)

This pre-symposium seminar, based on the book, A Framework for Understanding Poverty, by Ruby K. Payne, Ph.D. provides an in-depth study of information and issues that increase the participant’s knowledge and understanding of the poverty culture. Topics include how economic class affects behaviors and mindsets; why students from generational poverty often fear being educated, and the “hidden rules” within economic classes, discipline interventions that improve behaviors, and the eight resources that make a difference in success.

Workshop leader: Freta E. Parkes, professional educator, school board member, and consultant.

Attendance is limited to the first 100 individuals who register before May 19, 2004.

Cost to attend this one-day workshop: $20. Pre-registration by May 19, 2004, is required.

GED 2004 Teacher Training Institute

June 9 – 11, 2004 (Pre-registration is required.)

A limited number of travel grants for GED teachers are available. The travel grant does not include the $75 registration fee to attend this training activity. Until April 30, 2004, only teachers nominated by their districts or community colleges will be accepted. Please see your district or community college adult education administrator for details. After April 30, spaces will be available on a first come first served basis with priority being given to individuals on the waiting list.

The institute will consist of all new materials focusing on the areas of the testes on which Florida’s students have done the least well and also on the incorporation of family literacy and parenting education concepts into the GED Preparation lessons.
