GED-i Program Overview - U.S. Department of Education

GED-i Program Overview

The GED-i is an online curriculum that offers adults seeking a GED credential a self-paced, teacher facilitated resource. GED-i can be used anytime from any computer with Internet access. The GED-i’s online curriculum is intended to increase students’ study options in their quest for successful obtainment of their GED.

Instructors guide students through over 200 lessons that cover Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Additional features include a Consumer Education Module with 30 life skills lessons with clear ties to the GED content and a Student Orientation to the GED-i system and online learning. Currently, we are working on a pre-GED Reading component that will be added and available for instructor and student use in August of 2008.

With the diversity of lessons, quality of interaction, and depth of content, programs across the country have customized their individual use of the GED-i system. Instructors can use the online system in the classroom as a supplement to existing activities; students can use the system outside of class in a blended approach, and students can work solely at a distance with an instructor guiding the way.

The GED-i system has four tiers of access that have various features and functions that assist with the administration and instruction of the curriculum. These features allow for reporting and tracking of both instructors access and student progress. The tiers are Reports Center, Program Center, Teacher Center, and Student Center. The Teacher Center houses the features that track student progress and the Student Center houses the learning content.

The GED-i system is a user friendly, comprehensive and high quality curriculum tool that is used by hundreds of teachers and thousands of students nationally. In order to ensure that the instructors have the ability to use the features and functions in the system to their fullest capabilities, the GED-i project offers extensive and customized professional development opportunities to instructors.
