4773930-34417000General Chemistry SyllabusMrs. Nancy BrimEast Jackson Comprehensive High School - Room 441Email: nbrim@jcss.usWebsite: Description: During this school year, you will classify matter using physical and chemical characteristics. You will trace the development of the modern atomic theory and explain the current quantum mechanical model of the atom. The periodic table will be defined and explained using the modern atomic theory and the properties of atoms will be explained. Using the understanding of bonding and periodic properties, you will predict and define the various types of bonding between elements. You will name and write correct simple formulas for compounds. You will describe a chemical reaction with equations, and calculate relationships described by the equation. you will calculate relationships described by chemical equations. You will describe the physical properties of the three phases of matter, based on the kinetic theory. You will calculate mathematical relationships based on gas behavior. You will describe the process of solution and the characteristics of solutions qualitatively and quantitatively. You will explore the factors which affect the rates of reactions and apply them to the theory of dynamic equilibrium. You will predict changes in equilibrium based on LeChatelier’s principle, and apply it to acid-base theory. Course Goals: Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamentals of chemistry and its importance in society. Conduct quality scientific research and communicate findings.Course Outline and Weighting:Introduction, Matter, and Measurement 10%Atom Structure, Periodic Table, and Bonding 15%Chemical Nomenclature 10%Chemical Reactions and Kinetics 10%Midterm 5%The Mole 10%Stoichiometry 10%States of Matter, Energy, Gas Laws 10%Solutions and Acids and Bases 10%Final Exam 10%Required Materials: Each student is to have a three ring binder, paper, pen/pencil, scientific calculator with exponential notation ability (example: TI-30) every day in class. Phones cannot be used as calculators.Classroom Expectations:Consequences:1. Respect your fellow students and your teacher.1st Offense: verbal warning2. Follow directions the first time they are given.2nd Offense: 20 min. detention and Parent Contact3. Be prepared for class - bring all required materials.3rd Offense: 30 min. detention and Parent Contact4. Leave food, candy, and drink at home. Water is OK for class.4th Offense: Administrative referral 5. Be in your seat before the tardy bell stops ringing.6. Use lab equipment, sinks, and gas when in the lab only. 7. Cell phones can only be out if being used academically and with teacher permission.Certain infractions will automatically result in an administrative referral.Class procedures:Immediately read the screen and get started with its instructions.Put away cell phones.Have homework and all materials (notebook, pencil, etc.) out and ready to go.Work Required of Students:Students will do readings and work assignments from the textbook or other sources.Students will keep an organized notebook.Students will do in class and out of class projects.Students will demonstrate knowledge on quizzes and tests.Students will participate in laboratory exercises and complete any written lab work.Class Website: A calendar for the class as well as all assignments are posted on the website by unit. If you are unsure if you have homework or when the next test will be, you can access the website – at . You can also access Infinite Campus through the school website.Late Assignments: Assignments are considered late if they are received three days after the due date OR they are received AFTER the assignment checked and had been returned to the class. You will receive a grade no higher than 70 on a late assignment. You may only turn in three late labs per semester. After that, your lab must be turned in on time or it will not be accepted.Re-do Policy: Each student is given the opportunity to redo tests. For every four completed test review sheets turned in on time, a test of your choice can be re-taken. This does not include the midterm or the final.Classwork/Homework: Completing your classwork/homework assignments will greatly increase your opportunities for success in this class. Learning takes PRACTICE by doing, not watching someone else do it. I expect each student to complete classwork/homework assigned as it contributes to content mastery. If there are five problems and you can demonstrate mastery by just doing three, that is acceptable. The ultimate determination of mastery is the quizzes and tests so learn the content before then.Free Passes: You get two free bathroom passes a semester from me. There are no actual paper passes – I keep track of them on the seating chart. Once you use them up, there is no leaving class, even in an emergency. Use them wisely.-89535282575MAKE-UP WORK POLICYYou are held accountable for everything you missed during your absence. It is your responsibility to keep up with your missed work. You are given FIVE days to make up work after an absence. This includes tests and quizzes. If you have eight or more unexcused absences, then you can no longer get credit for this class. You can fix this by attending morning sessions with Mr. Cooley (7:00-7:55) or afternoon sessions Tuesday and/or Thursday with Mrs. Bolton (3:15-4:15). You must let me know when you are going so that I can send the work that you missed. You only have five days after the eight (or more) unexcused absence to get the work done during the before or after school times. If you have less than three absences at the end of each nine weeks and have turned in all assignments for those nine week topics, credit recovery is available to you. This is the ONLY way I will get work for credit recovery.all projects are due on the assigned date during the class period. If you are out the day a project is due, then you need to make arrangements to bring the project in on that date. NO EXCEPTIONS.00MAKE-UP WORK POLICYYou are held accountable for everything you missed during your absence. It is your responsibility to keep up with your missed work. If you violate any of the rules in the Student Code of Conduct, you will be referred to the administration.? You know how to act. Do not assume that I do not know how a human being should act around other human beings (I’ve been one longer than you!). Treat others (including me) as you would like to be treated yourself. I will not tolerate students who do not treat others (or me) with respect.? I usually get to school around 7:15 and stay until 4:00 p.m. or so. If the light in my classroom is on, I am at school – even if my door is shut! If you need extra help, please make a point of letting me know beforehand to assure that I will be able to stay to help you. ? Have a great year!-N.
