Student NameTeacherClassDateGender RolesToday’s society has different views on gender roles. Based on a few examples that the Hamilton songs, “Helpless” and “Satisfied” show, it is possible that some gender roles have since changed and will never get old. A few examples from the text show that gender roles have changed over time in marriage, opinions and a few other topics. To begin, women in the 1700’s were expected to look pretty and walk around. In the song Satisfied, Angelica sings, “I’m a girl in a world in which my only job is to marry rich…”. Society’s gender roles at the time was women were supposed to marry a man that was rich and not for love at all. Rich women were expected to flaunt their title and look as pretty as possible. Some places in the world still do arranged marriages because of tradition, but a majority of couples in the world are married because they love each other and are not married by force. In today’s time women are able to marry whoever they please no matter if it’s a man or a woman. To continue, women in the 1700’s needed parental permission and approval in order to marry. Most of the time it was a no if the man was not rich or did not own a lot of land. In the Hamilton song “Helpless”, Eliza sings, “My father makes his way across the room to you I panic for a second, thinking “we’re through” But then he shakes your hand and says “Be true””. The song shows how fathers had the final say-so on who their daughters married. In society now women don’t need permission from anyone and they can marry any man or women they please. Nonetheless, others may believe gender roles have not changed whatsoever. However, anyone that believes this, is wrong. First off, if gender roles has not evolved over time women wouldn’t be allowed to vote, have opinions in general, or even marry the person they loved. These are only a few major reasons that prove how gender roles have evolved since the 1700’s. Society has come a long way since the 1700’s in many ways, not just gender roles. To conclude, gender roles from the 1700’s are old and played out. The new society we have built has better realization skills in the sense of what women should/should not be allowed to do. More so in allowing women to have opinions on important topics that affect society as a whole. ................
