Request for Letter of Recommendation

Requesting Letters of Recommendation

When asking someone for a recommendation, please follow these steps:

1. Ask someone who knows you well and who will write a good recommendation.

2. If you ask the person to mail the letter for you, provide the person with an addressed, stamped envelope. This does not apply in the case of the school principal or counselor.

3. Give the person at least two weeks time to write the recommendation. It is unrealistic to expect an employer, teacher, or pastor to complete this for you overnight.

4. Complete a Request for Letter of Recommendation form. Make copies of the form and distribute to those persons you will ask to complete recommendations for you.

5. Give the person the appropriate materials yourself. Do not expect someone else to deliver your materials for you.

Write a thank you to those who have written letters of recommendation for you.
