APPENDIX A: Codebook for the Subset of the 2014 General Social SurveyThe General Social Survey (GSS) is a large, national probability sample of adults in the United States. It began in 1972 and continued on an almost yearly basis until 1996. In 1996, the GSS became a biannual survey and the sample size increased. Many questions are asked on each survey, while other questions are rotated from survey to survey. This subset from the 2014 GSS includes all the cases (2,538) and 86 variables. This data set has already been weighted using the weight variable supplied by GSS (WTSS).VariableDescription of VariableABANYAbortion if woman wants for any reasonABDEFECTAbortion if strong chance of serious defectABHLTHAbortion if woman's health seriously endangeredABNOMOREAbortion if married and wants no more childrenABPOORAbortion if low income and can't afford more childrenABRAPEAbortion if pregnant as result of rapeABSINGLEAbortion if not marriedADULTSHousehold members 18 years and olderAGE Age of respondentAGED Should aged live with their childrenAGEKDBRN Respondent's age when first child bornATTENDHow often respondent attends religious servicesBIBLE Feelings about the bibleCAPPUNFavor or oppose death penalty for murderCHILDSNumber of childrenCHLDIDELIdeal number of childrenCLASSSubjective class identificationCOLATHAllow antireligionist to teachCOLCOM Allow communist to teachCOLHOMO Allow homosexual to teachCOLMIL Allow militarist to teachCOLRAC Allow racist to teachDEGREE Respondent's highest degreeDENOMSpecific Protestant denominationEDUC Highest year of school completedETHNICRespondent’s race/ethnicityFAIR People fair or try to take advantageFEAR Afraid to walk at night in neighborhoodFINRELAOpinion of family incomeFUNDFundamentalism of respondent’s religionGRASS Should marijuana be made legalGUNLAW Favor or oppose gun permitsHAPMAR Happiness of marriageHAPPY General happinessHEALTHCondition of healthHISPANICIs Respondent HispanicHOMPOPNumber of persons in householdHRS1Number of hours respondent worked last weekHRS2Number of hours respondent usually works a weekIDRespondent’s identification (id) numberINCOME06 Total family income (2013)INC06RECRecoded total family income (2013)LIBATH Allow antireligious book in libraryLIBCOM Allow communist's book in libraryLIBHOMO Allow homosexual's book in libraryLIBMILAllow militarist's book in libraryLIBRACAllow racist's book in libraryMADEG Mother's highest degreeMAEDUC Highest year school completed, motherMARITALMarital statusMASEI10Mother’s socioeconomic statusPADEG Father's highest degreePAEDUC Highest year school completed, fatherPARTYIDPolitical Party AffiliationPASEI10Father’s socioeconomic statusPOLVIEWSThink of self as liberal or conservativePORNLAWFeelings about pornography lawsPOSTLIFE Belief in life after deathPRAY How often does respondent pray?PRAYER Support Supreme Court Decision on prayer in public schoolsPRES08 Vote for McCain or Obama in 2008PRES12Vote for Romney or Obama in 2012RACERace of respondentRACECEN1What is respondent’s race first mentionRACECEN2What is respondent’s race second mentionRACECEN3What is respondent’s race third mentionRELIG Respondent's religious preferenceRELIG1More detailed breakdown of religious preferenceRELITENStrength of religious affiliationSEI10Respondent’s socioeconomic statusSEX Respondent's sexSIBS Number of brothers and sistersSPDEG Spouse's highest degreeSPEDUC Highest year school completed, spouseSPKATH Allow antireligionist to speakSPKCOM Allow communist to speakSPKHOMO Allow homosexual to speakSPKMIL Allow militarist to speakSPKRAC Allow racist to speakSPSEI10Spouse’s socioeconomic statusTHNKSELF How important for child to learn to think for one’s selfTRUST Can people be trustedTVHOURS Hours per day watching televisionVOTE08Did respondent vote in 2008?VOTE12Did respondent vote in 2012?WTSSWeight variable for GSS14 (data subset already weighted by the variable WTSS)YEARYear of survey (2014 for all respondents)ZODIAC Respondent's astrological sign ................
