Assignment 1—Literature Search and Presentation

Assignment 1—Literature Search and Presentation

Problems to study:

1. Mood disorder (Depression, Post-partum depression, bipolar disorder)

2. Anxiety disorder (generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, panic disorder, Post- traumatic stress)

3. Substance abuse problem (alcohol or drug abuse)

4. Eating disorder (anorexia &/or bulimia)

5. Learning disorder (attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity, dyslexia)

6. Anger problem (including, but not limited to, conduct disorder)

To complete this group project, you will need to search on-line for a variety of refereed journal articles. You ought to agree on a way to divide responsibilities that is equitable and pragmatic.

1. Your group must compile an annotated bibliography according to APA-format in which the authors, titles, journal source, (journal name, month and year), directly quoting abstracts of at least 10 recent articles (from 2000- the present) are included. Your bibliography will be comprised of journal articles which inform you about dimensions A through E, below. For example, at least one of your articles will be descriptive; another will be evaluative; another theoretical; etc.

2. Read through the abstracts and divide up reading and “teaching” responsibilities such that each person in the group has information from at least two articles to bring to your group presentation. You can also gather information from books or on-line resources, but make sure to paraphrase, rather than CUT & PASTE, and to appropriately cite your references. Exchange information about these articles with group members and ME through your group’s discussion forum on Angel.

3. Each person will also be contributing to the group’s PowerPoint presentation. Feel free to use the PowerPoint template which has been included in Angel Course Documents. However, during your verbal presentation make sure to use the PowerPoint slides as brief prompts which you are able to elaborate upon to inform the class.

Your grade will be determined by the following rubric:

Annotated bibliography included at least 10 scholarly journal articles; abstracts were included; citations were done according to APA-format; the journal articles covered the breadth of the topics described in A through E on page 2:

Notes were exchanged with group members and ME at least 3 days prior to the presentation. The notes appeared in Word format and as PowerPoint slides.

The presentation was comprehensive.

The presentation was clear.

The presenter was comfortable enough with the material to give frequent eye contact while s/he explained the material.

Find articles which inform you about the following dimensions of the problem:

Part A: Problem Description; Data Regarding Prevalence & Incidence; Diagnosing and Measuring the Problem

• Describe and define the problem; how are individuals personally affected by the problem; how does the problem impact others and/or society?

• What is the prevalence and incidence of the problem nationally and/or globally? Make sure to provide demographic data about whether certain racial/ethnic/gender/age/other groups experience the problem more readily.

• How is the problem diagnosed? What screening tools are commonly used to determine whether a person has the problem, and if so, the extent to which the person(s) experiences the problem?

(possibly slides 1-5)

Part B: Etiological Theories

• Describe a variety of theoretical explanations about the contributing or risk factors that predispose individuals to experience the problem. Include group members’ views about what might help people to cope with or reduce the problem, and try to match your views to the theoretical explanations about which you’ve read. (possibly slides 6-7 and additional slides as needed)

Part C: Factors that Influence Help-Seeking for this Problem

• What factors (variables) appear to predispose some to get help for this problem, whereas others try to deny the problem and/or avoid seeking help?

• According to the literature, is there a stigma to having this problem?

• Where do people who have this problem go for help?

• Who gives help and where? (possibly slides 8-10 and additional slides as needed)

Part D: Prevention or Education Programs

• Describe a prevention and/or education program from the literature to deal with this problem? These programs raise awareness about the problem and suggest ways to cope with it. (possibly slides 11 and additional slides as needed)

Part E: Evidence-Based Practice/Treatment/Intervention

• Describe the results of a randomized-control study [2 or more groups are being compared where one group is exposed to the experimental treatment, and the other receives no special treatment] in which a constructive psychosocial treatment for this problem was evaluated. This must be an empirical study, not a summary reported in the literature review section of a journal article (possibly slides 12-14 and additional slides as needed).

KEEP PRESENTATION TO 20 SLIDES OR LESS.
