5. Grade Level: Varied-can be modified for students w/ IEP’s.

6. Approximate Time Needed: 9 video segments totaling @:50 minutes. View each segment then review what the student perceived. Allow for student to demonstrate understanding @:05 after each segment. This lesson could be broken into 9 days of @:30 per day again dependent on target audience.

8. Objectives/Lesson Outcomes:

From defining the characteristics of fiction forms and genres to understanding plot and character development, introduce elementary students to more-advanced skills and strategies for understanding and interpreting literary texts. All content is tied to national standards and benchmarks

9. Materials and Resources Required:

A. Technology (include location and equipment): Students can access this lesson from in class computers, computer lab and home if possible. The students will individually log onto their account and go to the directed website. From there each student will view one of the 9 segments relating to FICTION. This lesson can be utilized by my students in 5th grade but function at lower ability level. The visual and auditorial presentation allows for understanding (comprehension) without relying on the ability or lack thereof to read.

10. Lesson Procedures:

Student will view each segment and answer questions orally. Worksheets have open opened questions consisting of 1-2 word answers to alleviate written responses. After each segment a review will ask the student to name differing Literature genres (type of story). Students may research other topics presented such as –Cyclops (from Odysseys) or Ithaca (cross curricula with Social Studies). Students may create dioramas, posters, models, etc. to demonstrate understanding in ways other than a written presentation.

Students will be asked to identify PLOT, MAIN IDEA, CONFLICT (main problem), RESOLUTION (how problem is solved), CHARACTER and CONCLUSION

11. Modifications for Differentiated Instruction:

A. Remediation: This is a lesson that will continue until a student demonstrates understanding.

B. Enrichment: For the student that enjoys the topic further exploration would be encouraged. Demonstrate how to access museums, internet, library, etc.

12. Student Assessment:

Students will find the identified part of a story as defined above and point it out to peers. Short answer quiz - Teacher observation.
