Ancient Rome can be found in the area of Europe that is now known as Italy. Italy is a peninsula that sticks out into the Mediterranean Sea from the north (It looks just like a boot!). The city of Rome is near the center of the peninsula on the Tiber River. This is where the great Roman Empire began. Rome was successful because of its location near the Mediterranean Sea. Later, the Roman Empire would include all of the land around the Mediterranean Sea. Rome was easy to unify (come together) because the land was not broken up into small isolated valleys and the mountains were not as rugged as Greece. Italy had broad, fertile plains, which help support a large population The Romans conquered (took over by force) about half of Europe, the whole north coast of Africa, and many of the lands in the Middle East.
