Welcome to Common Core Geometry

Mrs. Michele Rosini

E-mail: mrosini@smithtown.k12.ny.us

Website:

This is the second course of the high school Regents mathematics courses. It is a one year course which meets the New York Common Core Learning Standards. The course emphasizes conceptual understanding and problem-solving abilities rather than assessing knowledge of isolated skills and facts. The course includes geometric relationships, constructions, locus, informal and formal proofs, transformational geometry, coordinate geometry and trigonometry. This course requires the use of a graphing calculator, which is provided by the school. Students take a midterm and the Regents exam in June. The Regents exam grade counts as one-ninth of the overall course grade.

Required Materials: Please have these materials with you on a daily basis.

o Binder with college ruled paper (there is no textbook for this course, all material will be provided)

o Several PENCILS and erasers

o Scientific Calculator (TI 30 XII) – required

o 2 Compasses (one you will leave in the classroom and one you will leave at home)

o Ruler

o Protractor

Extra Help:

Extra help will be offered several days during the week, both before and after school. Specific days in which extra help is being held will be posted in the classroom and also on my website at the start of each week. Students may also attend the Math Learning Center which is open all periods throughout the day.

Homework Policy:

Homework is a crucial part of the learning process, especially at this level. Homework allows for practice and reinforcement and will not be taken lightly. Students will be asked to copy down their homework assignments at the beginning of each class period into their agenda. All homework is due the following class period and no late assignments will be accepted unless an absence has occurred, in which case, the assignment is due upon their return to school.

Grading:

Quarter grades for this class are comprised of assessments, homework, classwork and cumulative reviews. A midterm will be given in January and will count as 25% of the third quarter grade.

Attendance / Grade Policy:

o Regular attendance is crucial for success.

o If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what was missed.

o If you cut class, you will NOT receive credit for missed work and will NOT be allowed to hand in missed work at a later date. This INCLUDES tests.

o If you cut class the day of a test or quiz, you will automatically receive an F.

o Class starts at the bell, and coming to class any time after that is subject to lateness. If you suspect you will be late, come to class with a pass signed by a teacher or staff member. After 3 unexcused late arrivals, a referral will be written.

o If you have music lessons, come to class first and let me know. You are only allowed to miss class 2 times per quarter.

o If you are absent the day of a test or quiz, you must schedule an appointment within the week to take the make-up during your free time, NOT during regular class time.

Student Requests for Schedule Changes:

A student’s selection of specific courses involves a commitment to those subjects. It also involves factors such as staffing and classroom usage that have cost implications. Consequently, a student should consider withdrawing from a course only for the most serious academic and personal reasons. It is necessary for students considering a schedule change to consult with their parent/guardian, teacher and guidance counselor. The procedure that students must follow to request a schedule change is outlined in the student agenda. Students must adhere to the following timelines:

Statement of Integrity:

The Mathematics Department of the Smithtown Central School District expects the highest conduct from its students. We encourage all of our students to work hard and to do their own research and writing for homework, special assignments or projects. Any evidence of plagiarism will result in no credit for the assignment. Assignments are considered to be reflections of an individual’s work unless otherwise instructed by the teacher. If a student is caught using material that he or she did not create themselves, the student will not get credit for the assignment, project, etc.

Exams and other assessments should be considered opportunities for a student to show what he or she has learned over the course of the unit, semester or year. During any assessment, if the student is caught using any kind of electronic device (including but not limited to cell phones) or has an electronic device out, the student will automatically fail the exam. Therefore, cell phones and other electronic devices should be left at home or in the student’s locker during exams. In addition, attempting to give or receive assistance in any form during an assessment will result in a failing grade for all parties involved.

What is Expected:

✓ Students are expected to be in class on time every day with all necessary materials.

✓ Students are expected to complete and come to class with their homework assignments.

✓ Students are expected to come to class with a good attitude and ready to learn.

✓ Students should NOT use any electronic devices during the class period including cell phones.

✓ Students are to have the utmost respect for themselves, one another and myself.

What Students Can Expect:

✓ A “Do Now” set of questions each day unless there is a test or quiz.

✓ Homework 4-5 days a week.

✓ Cumulative Review Assignments on a regular basis.

✓ At least two days notice for a test or quiz.

✓ Fairness and respect towards each and every student.

For the Parent/Guardian:

✓ Please contact me at any time via e-mail or voicemail (Math Department: (631)382-3063)

✓ Please be aware that I will contact you in the event that your child is in danger of failing the quarter, missed an excessive amount of homework assignments or with any general concerns I may have.

✓ All grades are updated regularly. Please be sure to check the online grade book through the Parent Portal on a weekly basis.

✓ Please utilize my website that will be updated each Monday with homework assignments for the week, test and quiz dates, and extra help schedule!
