Geometry Project – Ratio/Scale Drawing

Geometry Project – Ratio/Scale Drawing

(G.5B, G.11B, G.11C)

1. Prepare a scale drawing on a poster board of one square of a newspaper cartoon, changing the dialogue box to include positive (preferably humorous) ideas dealing with Geometry theorems, postulates, or definitions. (If you’re not sure what to use, ask me!!) Drawing will be completed by superimposing a grid on the picture, and a scaled-up, proportional grid on the poster board. You MUST get it approved with me first if you do not use a cartoon from the comics section of the newspaper. If your dilation is not on a paper at least 11” x 14”, you will lose points.

2. The scale to be used for the grids can be determined as follows:

[pic]

This will give you a poster width of x inches and a poster length of 14 inches. Now determine your scale factor.

3. Draw a grid of 1cm x 1cm squares on your cartoon picture. Draw a grid on your poster board using the scale from step 2. Be very accurate. Spot-check your lines to be sure you still have them 1cm x 1cm all the way across the page. The lines and shapes from each small block on the cartoon will be sketched on the corresponding larger block on the poster board. Color (or shading if it is black and white) will be added to enhance the drawing. DO NOT erase the grids. Make sure they are still visible on the final draft. Helpful hints: Draw on the matte side of the poster board, not the shiny side. Color darkly with map colors, not markers (they get messy).

4. Up to 10 points of extra credit can be given for obvious extra effort, complexity of the drawing, and the humorous usage of the geometry.

5. This sheet must be filled out (including name and period) and turned in with your poster. Your grade will be returned to you on this sheet. Staple the original cartoon (a Xerox copy is okay) to a front corner of your poster. Also be sure your name is on your poster. Tape this paper to the back of the poster (in such a way I can easily remove it without damaging your work).

6. Please record the appropriate scale factor for your project: _______
