ANIMAL FARM

Persuasive Language/Propaganda Journal

Animal Farm, a novella written by George Orwell in 1945 was meant to parallel the Russian Revolution that was going on at the time. If Orwell were to openly oppose the ways of the communist party, he would have undoubtedly been prosecuted. Instead, Orwell wrote Animal Farm to express his hatred for communism in a discreet way. The Russian Communist Party, founded by Lenin, came into power in 1917, ending the reign of the Czars. In the fable the animals on Manor Farm overthrow their leader, Mr. Jones and attempt to govern themselves without men. Two pigs on the farm, Napoleon and Snowball take control of the situation. Over time, through the careful manipulation of information, much of which is accomplished through persuasive language, one of them emerges as the sole leader. They represent Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky, two political leaders during the revolution. What starts out as a farm where every animal is treated equally ends up being.....?

Directions:

While reading Orwell’s Animal Farm start a double entry journal collecting passages from the novel that are examples of persuasive language or speech. The manipulation of language to distort the truth and thus achieve political ends (often in order to control people) is one of Orwell’s central themes in this novel.

Once you’ve copied down a passage from the book containing persuasive language and cited it in MLA format, explain how it manipulates the truth and explore any possible hidden motives it may conceal (what goal or objectives is it a pretext for?).

All journals must be typed in the same format as your double entry journal for Lord of the Flies

An A project will contain:

- At least 15 examples of persuasive language (limit your quotes to three lines of text or less)

- A short commentary for each example, consisting of complete sentences explaining how each example uses persuasive language and exploring any possible hidden motives or agendas it may be a pretext for.
