WHEREAS: A healthy, democratic society is founded on engaged, informed and included citizenry; and

WHEREAS: Public, Educational and Governmental (PEG) media centers provide people with access to electronic communications training, equipment, facilities and delivery systems and encourage civic dialogue and participation and teach literacy; and

WHEREAS: Public, Educational and Governmental (PEG) media centers serve their communities' needs and promote media democracy for all people regardless of their life circumstances, their political or religious beliefs or their ability to pay; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the City of Cambridge proclaims March 18th through 24th as Media Democracy Week in honor of Cambridge Community Television and its contribution to the citizens of Cambridge and further supports the efforts of Cambridge Community Television in its activities during this week as it seeks to educate the community on the important role of media democracy in the perpetuation of liberty and freedom.

WHEREAS: While Cambridge Cares About AIDS continues to provide case management, housing and prevention education, currently some new programs include harm reduction, vocational counseling and employment, medication reclamation for Haiti and Youth on Fire, Cambridge Cares About AIDS program for homeless, runaway and throwaway youths; and

WHEREAS: March is designated as Cambridge Women's History month to coincide with National Women's History Month; and

WHEREAS: Cambridge women of every race, class, and ethnicity and of every era of history have played and continue to play a critical economic, cultural, and social role in every sphere of the life of the City, Commonwealth, and Nation; and

WHEREAS: Cambridge women have been leaders, not only in their rights of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also in the abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the industrial safety movement, the civil rights movement, and other progressive movements, which create a more fair and just society; and

WHEREAS: Despite their many contributions, the role of American women in history has been consistently overlooked and undervalued; and

WHEREAS: The Cambridge Women's Heritage Project, through on-going programs, initiatives and research is working to recognize the remarkable and ordinary women of Cambridge and their contributions, both past and present; and

WHEREAS: The Heritage Project has singled out for special recognition in 2001 the life and legacy of Cantabrigian Florence Luscomb, a life-long socialist, suffragist and political activist; and

WHEREAS: Ms. Luscomb was born in Lowell on February 6, 1887 and graduated from MIT in 1909, working in architecture until World War I, when she became executive secretary for the Boston Equal Suffrage Association and became famous for her open-air speeches. In 1915, she successfully pressured the Massachusetts Legislature to ratify a Federal Amendment on suffrage by canvassing for a quota of signatures of women equal to that of a majority for all male voters; and

WHEREAS: Florence was also known for her affiliations with the Massachusetts Civil League (concerned with prison reform), the Joint Board of Sanitary Control (policy factory safety), the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts, the American League for Peace and Democracy; and

WHEREAS: Ms. Luscomb's contributions to Cambridge included living out the last 40 years of her life in communes until her death, and activities in the early 1970's picketing to free Angela Davis, speaking for the celebration of Women's Rights Day, and demonstrating against the U.S. involvement in Vietnam; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the Cambridge City Council re-confirms that March is designated as Cambridge Women's History month, to coincide with National Women's History Month; and be it further

RESOLVED: That in March, 2001, special recognition is given to the life and words of Florence Luscomb; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the Cambridge City Council recognizes International Women's Day on March 8 by encouraging all to attend a program from 1-3 PM at the Senior Center highlighting the life of Florence Luscomb and the suffrage movement in Cambridge.

WHEREAS: It has come to the attention of the Cambridge City Council that the MBTA is considering the extension of bus service past its current 12:30 a.m. shutdown; and

WHEREAS: Extending this service would greatly benefit residents of Cambridge who work at night by providing convenient and affordable transportation; and

WHEREAS: Extending this service would also encourage people to drink responsibly, promote safety by minimizing the distance in which people walk home during the most vulnerable hours for pedestrians and protect our environment by reducing traffic; and

WHEREAS: Many residents and visitors of Cambridge would take advantage of the extended hours of operation, particularly in the densely populated and well-traveled areas of Harvard and Central Square and along Cambridge Street; now therefore be it

ORDERED: That the Cambridge City Council go on record supporting the efforts of the MBTA to provide late-night service in the Commonwealth; and be it further

ORDERED: That the Cambridge City Council extends its appreciation to the MBTA for considering the expansion of this service in Cambridge; and be it further

ORDERED: That the City Clerk be and hereby is requested to forward a suitably engrossed copy of this order to the State Department of Transportation on behalf of the entire City Council.

WHEREAS: Cambridge’s own George “Chip” Greenidge was one of the recipients who was honored at this event; and

WHEREAS: George “Chip” Greenidge has received many other awards including being named one of Ebony Magazine’s 30 young leaders to watch for in the year 2000; and

WHEREAS: George “Chip” Greenidge was also recognized as founder of The State of Young Black Boston, the National Black College Alliance and the Benjamin Banneker Charter School in Cambridge; and

WHEREAS: George “Chip” Greenidge is doing work that makes a real difference and bringing new life to every neighborhood; and

WHEREAS: George “Chip” Greenidge’s work has proven to be highly effective and a true example of his labor of love; now therefore be it

WHEREAS: This City Council was deeply saddened at learning of the death of Major E. Brooks, Sr. on March 3, 2001; and

WHEREAS: Major was born in Stanford, Connecticut, and moved to Boston and attended public school there; and

WHEREAS: In 1956 Major married the love of his life, Velmer Bolden, and they moved to Cambridge; and

WHEREAS: Major served in the United States Air Force Reserves, where he rose to the rank of Master Sergeant from 1953-1973; and

WHEREAS: Major was a City of Cambridge Recreation Department employee; for many years he was the Director of the Hoyt Field Community Teen Center (The Mission); and

WHEREAS: At the Mission, Major was known by one and all as "Mr. B"; he treated every teen who came in with love and respect and in turn taught them to love and respect themselves, each other and the neighborhood they lived in; and

WHEREAS: After many years of devoted service at the Hoyt Field Teen Center, Major served as Recreational Supervisor and Administrator of city-wide programs until he retired in June, 1993; and

WHEREAS: Major was the lead singer of a '50's/60's R&B group, The Sophomores; they were one of the first black singing groups from the Boston area, and they appeared on Dick Clark's American Bandstand TV show in 1956; and

WHEREAS: Major was very active in the civic life of Cambridge; he was a member of the board and an officer of the Riverside Cambridgeport Community Corporation, the Advisory Board for the Cambridge Youth Resources Bureau, the Board of Directors of the Cambridge Community Center and a member of several other community organizations; and

WHEREAS: Major's passing will leave a void in the lives of all his surviving family, his wife Velmer (Bolden) Brooks; his children Major E. Jr., Randy L., and Anthony S. Brooks, Julie G. Gardner and Loreyda Monroy; his siblings Gwendolyn Lisenby and Harriet and Raymond Gainville; his sister-in-law Jessie M. Bolden; his ten grandchildren; his one great grandchild; and his many relatives and friends; and

WHEREAS: Major will be sorely missed by all he touched and loved; now therefore be it

WHEREAS: Elizabeth served as director of finance and state government for the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts; and

WHEREAS: Elizabeth was a board member of the Friendly Aid Society and a member of Wellesley's town advisory committee; and

WHEREAS: Elizabeth served on the Governor's Commission on the Status of Women in the 1980's; and

WHEREAS: Elizabeth spent many hours as a volunteer comforting severely ill or abused children as she was so effective at calming inconsolable youngsters; and

WHEREAS: Elizabeth was a longtime board member of The Cambridge Homes and of the Longview Corporation; and

WHEREAS: Elizabeth was president of the Mothers' Club; and

WHEREAS: Elizabeth was the devoted wife of the late C. Duane Aldrich; and

WHEREAS: Elizabeth’s passing will leave a void in the lives of all her surviving family, her daughters Ann Aldrich, Elizabeth Kaspar-Aldrich, Amy Geogan and Sarah Murray; her sons Peter, John, Stephen and Mark Aldrich; and twenty-two grandchildren; and

Millions more, including homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Soviet prisoners of war and political dissidents, also suffered grievous oppression and death under Nazi tyranny; and

WHEREAS: The history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity to reflect on the moral responsibilities of individuals, societies, and governments; and

WHEREAS: We the people of the City of Cambridge should actively rededicate ourselves to the principles of individual freedom in a just society; and

WHEREAS: The Days of Remembrance have been set aside for the people of the City of Cambridge to remember the victims of the Holocaust as well as to reflect on the need for respect of all peoples; and

WHEREAS: Pursuant to an Act of Congress (Public Law 96-388, October 7, 1980) the United States Memorial Council designates the Days of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust to be Sunday, April 15 through Sunday, April 22, 2001, including the international Day of Remembrance known as Yom Hashoah, April 19; now therefore be it

WHEREAS: Shirley was employed at the Neville Manor on November 22, 1988 as an Assistant Supervisor of Payroll; and

WHEREAS: Shirley transferred to the Retirement Board on March 18, 1995 as a confidential secretary/receptionist; and

WHEREAS: Shirley is a hardworking, loyal, conscious employee; and

WHEREAS: Shirley is a proud mother and grandmother; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That this City Council go on record expressing its appreciation to Shirley A. English for her twelve years of dedicated service to the citizens and to the City of Cambridge and wish her much happiness in her retirement; and be it further

WHEREAS: Walter played semiprofessional football and baseball; and

WHEREAS: Walter was a United States Naval veteran of World War II and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2005 in Marblehead; and

WHEREAS: Walter worked in the insurance industry where he was President of the Auger Insurance Agency in Salem and the Bay State Insurance Association in Boston; and

WHEREAS: Walter’s passing will leave a void in the lives of all his surviving family, his wife Barbara Lally; his daughters Mary Kathryn, Martha and Gretchen Lally and Sharon Lally Doliber; his sons Peter T., David M. and Michael Lally; his three sisters, one brother and seven grandchildren; and

WHEREAS: Walter will be sorely missed by all she touched and loved; now therefore be it

WHEREAS: Alfonso was hired on April 27, 1970 as a laborer at the Cambridge Hospital; and

WHEREAS: Alfonso transferred to the Public Works Department on March 3, 1986; and

WHEREAS: Alfonso received letters of commendation from the Department of Public Works Commissioner for perfect attendance for 1988, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996; and

WHEREAS: Alfonso received many letters of commendation and recognition for his fine work; Police Commissioner Anderson recognized his good work in 1993 and 1994; City Manager and Public Works Commissioner recognized Alfonso for his outstanding performance in 1995; and in 2000 the Assistant to the City Council commended Alfonso for his hard work in preparing the City Council Chamber for the Inauguration of the new City Council members; and

WHEREAS: Alfonso was promoted to Park Maintenance Craftsperson on September 1, 1995; now therefore be it

WHEREAS: At the semi-final competition, the entire CRLS cast received an award for ensemble acting; and

WHEREAS: In the first round of the competition, CRLS students Jake Alexander and Alex Brown received individual awards for their acting; and

WHEREAS: At the award ceremony at the state finals, CRLS student Alex Brown will be awarded first prize for his performance in the statewide monologue competition, and Jake Alexander and David Bischoff will receive honorable mention for their monologue performances; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the City Council go on record congratulating the CRLS cast and crew, along with the CRLS Drama Department, for winning the semi-final competition, and for the awards for individual acting, ensemble acting and the monologue competition; and be it further

WHEREAS: This City Council was deeply saddened at learning of the death of Margaret E. (McNamara) Dunn on March 12, 2001; and

WHEREAS: Margaret was the beloved wife of the late Arthur H. Dunn; and

WHEREAS: Margaret’s passing will leave a void in the lives of all her surviving family, her sons Arthur L. and Richard W. Dunn; her daughters-in-law Jean and Tina Dunn; her grandchildren Allison, Jonathan, Jeffrey, James, Matthew and Ryan Dunn; and her sisters Patricia Hurley, Helen Pacheco and Jean Day; and

WHEREAS: Margaret will be sorely missed by all she touched and loved; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That this City Council go on record extending its deepest sympathy to the family of Margaret E. Dunn at this time of such personal loss; and be it further

end- of- season record of 24-1, with an undefeated record of 16-0 in the Greater

Boston League; and

WHEREAS: The Basketball Team roster includes Seniors:

WHEREAS: This team was guided to the 2001 Massachusetts Division I Championship by

Head Coach Lance Dottin; Assistant Coaches Warren Ellcock, Damon Banks,

Peter Mugar, Frank Greenidge, Frank Cabral and Robert Cox; and Team

Managers Sara Morgan and Jessica Martinez; and

WHEREAS: The Cambridge Rindge and Latin Boy’s Basketball Team finished the year not

only number one in the state, but also ranked 10th in the east region by

USA Today, placing them among the top 40 basketball teams in the

country; and

WHEREAS: The Cambridge Rindge and Latin Boy’s Basketball Team defeated Everett

72-38, Acton/Boxboro 63-53, Central Catholic 76-55, Brockton 89-65; and

WHEREAS: In front of a charged crowd at a packed Worcester Centrum on

March 17, 2001, the Cambridge Rindge and Latin Boy’s Basketball Team

earned a redemptive victory by defeating Holy Name 73-69 in the 2001

Massachusetts Division 1 State Championship; and

WHEREAS: Following the victory the team was escorted by thousands of fans through the

streets of Cambridge for an energized victory parade and rally; and

WHEREAS: A banquet was held on Friday, May 25, 2001 at the University Park Hotel

on behalf of The Cambridge Rindge and Latin Boy’s Basketball Champions;

now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the City Council extend its congratulations to the Cambridge Rindge

and Latin Boy’s Basketball Team for its commitment and dedication, which

culminated in bringing the State Title back to Cambridge and adding a new

banner to the dynasty which is Cambridge Rindge and Latin Basketball;

now therefore be it further

RESOLVED: That the City Clerk be and hereby is requested to forward a suitably

engrossed copy of this resolution to the Cambridge Rindge and Latin Boys

Basketball Team on behalf of the entire City Council.
