Suggested Activities/Procedures:
1. Divide the class into groups to research the Nazi Youth Movement—Jungvolk, Hitler Youth, League of Young Girls, League of German Girls,
And Faith and Beauty. Use the following sites:
2. Groups also look for groups that did not participate in the Youth Movement, ie., Swing Kids. How did these young people express themselves? Did they have a significant impact? Look at the following example of a reluctant participant. What is your impression of this young man?

3. Referencing your research, what was Hitler’s objective (and the Nazi Party) with regard to the Youth Movement? Put the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance in its original form and the Jungvolk Oath on a transparency. Compare and contrast the two oaths.
4. On one side of a single sheet of notebook paper, relate your experiences (or what you may know by observing the experiences of friends or other family members) as a member of a youth group to an age-comparable German Youth Group in 1939. Did you have to take an oath to join? Do you remember what you promised in the oath? Do you wear a badge? Do you earn awards for achievement within the group?
5. On the other side of the paper, paraphrase the Pledge of Allegiance and the Jungvolk Oath. Explain if you think these would or would not have any affect on the German Youth and why? Note any religious references in both. Research newspapers for articles about the Pledge of Allegiance and dissenters who are opposed to the current reference to God in the US Pledge. Why are they opposed to this reference? Based on your comments and findings, answer the following question. Do you think the current Pledge of Allegiance that includes the phrase, under God, should be replaced with the original version that did not include those words? Explain your answer.
