Raeder’s plan to transport German subs from the North Sea to the Black Sea had to be realised if the German Navy was to operate in the Black Sea. 6 boats were chosen for this purpose : U9, U18, U19, U20, U23 and U24. These were Type II – B boats of 42,7 metres in lenght, 4.1 metres in width and weighed 270 tonnes each. ................
