Minutes of the Dorset Twinning Association Management Committee Meeting
17th June 2013 at 7pm at Westport House, Wareham
Present: John Pounder, John Wilson, Tony Watts, Jeremy Read, Jacquie Hall, Jeremy Barker,
David Warhurst, Philip Sharp
1. Apologies: None – all present. John Pounder offered Congratulations to John Wilson on his re-election and his continuing role as Chairman of Dorset County Council
2. Minutes of the 5th March 2013 meeting were agreed
3. Matters arising not on the agenda: We need to push the brochure again for all at the AGM. Not sure whether any contributions have been received recently by the Webmaster for it
4. Finance Report: All subs are now paid.
The bank statements are still in Philip Sharp’s name, but are sent to Jacquie’s address.
For the examination of the accounts the books will be given to John Wilson to pass to Paul Kent at County Hall.
It was agreed that a subsidy of £75 be paid to help the English Fire Cadet attend the threeway twinning between the three Fire Brigades of England, France and Germany
Should we reduce the subscription next year, as we have negotiated the insurance cost down?
5. Website: The new Rudesheim website has a link on the DTA website as requested.
6. The new revised Constitution is highlighted on the website.
7. Cherbourg Conference: Much discussion about the running of the day Conference in Cherbourg. Positive and negative points were made, and on sheet attached.
Tony Watts was paid for his expenses in arranging the Conference.
8. There should be 28 days notice before the AGM date. It was suggested we use the Colliton Club in Dorchester. Suggested date Wednesday 23rd October 2013.
9. AOB: BSO plus other orchestras got together in Bournemouth recently. BSO want relationships with other groups and choirs all over France and Dorset. Put 1 or 2 concerts per year to publicise twinning and things will grow
Douzelage Young Musician of the Year: There are rounds in each country, then winners to come to Sherborne in 2014 depending on EU funding (Youth in Action).
The banner is now incorrect: Lyme Regis has joined DTA, and some names are defunct. The spelling of Bayeux is incorrect
20 th anniversary of Sturminster Newton and 70th anniversary of D Day: there will be a twinning exhibition, and showing the WW2 history of Montebourg.
10. Date of next meeting: Suggested date is Monday 9th September at Westport House to agree the AGM agenda
Cherbourg Conference
Brittany Ferries explained the change of sulphur % in fuel, thus fuel costs will rocket.
The French asked TW what they should do next. It was suggested the DTA could be involved, but it is French decision.
TW has a list of French twins of English/Dorset towns (JP&JH now hold the list)
Negative points;
There should have been comfort breaks.
No water
Not enough relevant speakers
Had to move accommodation in the afternoon, leaving us with only one microphone
Translation by only one woman was too much for one, and difficult for her.
The need for 30 – 40 year old members not addressed. Small groups of similar hobbies can exchange – different sort of twinning.
The French are unaware of the discounts they can get from Brittany ferries.
Meeting was not run very well.
Positive points:
Good seal of approval was shown because John Wilson was joined on the podium by Dr Claude Halbecq
Some of the English twins met up for the first time, as normally all are isolated, even though they are neighbours.
German twinning is doing well, and some delegates were there.
The French newspaper was positive after the event
The message came across that we should try harder for European funding
The Fire Cadets links are working
TW did well to organise a function in a foreign country
Ideas for action are required for the future.
