25 Weirdly Specific Facebook Ad Targeting Ideas

Hey there, Wilco de Kreij here.

With over 2+ billion monthly active users (source), Facebook advertisers can pretty much reach whoever they want, whenever they want it.

A gigantic opportunity.

But it's not all good though, as many advertisers seem to struggle to show their message to the right audience: those who're potentially interested in their product or service.

Even though Facebook gives advertisers the opportunity to target their ads to very specific groups of people, many advertisers simply go for a combination of "location", "age", "gender" and a few interests.

A good start, but it only scratches the surface of what's possible...

... and being a marketer it'd be a crime not to use that, right?

Since you're reading this guide, I'm guessing you fall within one of three categories:

1. You want to start running Facebook Ads, but you don't know how yet. 2. You are already running some Facebook Ads, but you want improve your

ROI. 3. You are Facebook Ads master and just looking for some nuggets.

If you recognise yourself in one of those, I've got good news for you. Besides the targeting inspiration you'll get in this guide, I've prepared a (free) complimentary Facebook Ads training with "golden nuggets" for both beginners AND advanced advertisers. More on that later.

How to target Facebook Ads?

One of the biggest advantages to advertising on Facebook is your ability to target specific groups of highly engaged people. In fact, compared to the average online reach of 38% for narrowly targeted campaigns, Facebook is 89% accurate (Nielsen OCR, 2013). When targeting your ads, you have the following options.

Location

Location targeting allows you to reach customers in key locations by country, state/province, city and zip code. You can also target by radius from a city or exclude locations.

Demographics

As an advertiser, you can refine your ad's target audience based on content people have shared about themselves in their Facebook profiles, such as age, gender, relationship status, education and type of work they do.

Interests

Interest targeting lets you define your ideal audience by their interests, hobbies and Pages they like on Facebook.

Facebook identifies interests from information people have added to their Timeline, keywords associated with the Pages they like or apps they use, ads

they've clicked on and other similar sources.

Behaviors

Behaviors are activities that people do on or off Facebook that inform on which device they're using, purchase behaviors or intents, travel preferences and more.

Advanced Targeting

Custom Audiences lets you target Facebook Ads to existing customers or audiences using information you already have. For example, customer custom audiences, website traffic custom audiences, engagement custom audiences or lookalike audiences based on these.

In this guide, I'm not going to focus on "the obvious targeting methods". Quite the opposite, actually.

Below, you'll find 25 weirdly specific things you can use to target your Facebook Ads. While going through this list, I want you to be inspired by what's possible. Most of these 25 might not be relevant for your exact business... but it will help you to think outside the box and realise what's possible.
