Excerpts

The following are some excerpts from Student Body Shots. Hofstetter’s routine, however, is not simply a compilation of material from the book. The vast majority of it is original, never before heard material, and he always throws in a few new things specific to wherever he is performing. What appears below are samples of his wit, and the type of humor his audience has come to expect.

"My favorite orientation game is the one where you try to see how many people’s names you can forget in one day."

-Orientation

"College students will put their dishes in the sink, but they’ll never go to the trouble to put them in a dishwasher right next to it. Why? The same reason that all of our laundry is on the floor instead of in the closet, and we throw up in the hallway instead of the bathroom. When you’re that drunk, doors can be very tricky."

-Food

"How come when you visit other schools, you look for people you know?"

-Travel

"I don’t understand why people don’t rush. I mean, if there’s one thing I hate, it’s getting free stuff while meeting people."

-Greek Life

"Waking up with someone you care about is great. Except if you’re hungover and they’re waking up for an 8:00 AM class. Then it sucks."

-Hooking Up

"I was upset at my bookstore for paying me so little for my used books. I’d hardly call anything still shrink-wrapped in cellophane “used.”"

-Books

"Some RAs are awesome. Others make door decorations with your name written on the silhouette of a farm animal."

-Resident Advisors

"A lot of people ask me what I’m going to do after graduation. I think I’ll go to dinner with my parents, then drink a whole lot and pass out."

-Graduation

AWARD-WINNING COLUMNIST RELEASES FIRST BOOK

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Columnist Steve Hofstetter's humor is now available to bring home in his first full-length book, "Student Body Shots: A Sarcastic Look at the Best 4-6 Years of Your Life."

"Student Body Shots" is a clever look at one of the most commonly experienced institutions among 18-22-year-olds: college. In the book, Hofstetter takes his readers from move-in day to move-out day, covering all aspects in between—including dating, doing laundry, and dining halls. The book also contains a forward from actor Rider Strong and carries the endorsement of the popular college website, .

"I'm looking forward to the book talks and signings," said the recently 23-year-old Hofstetter. "The only things I've ever signed before are rent checks."

Divided into subjects like "Men and Women," "Academics," and "The Daily Grind," the book is made up of small segments that mock everything in college, such as the first time students register for classes and the first time they actually register for classes they want.

In "Student Body Shots," Hofstetter provides his readers with lots of new material, as well as hundreds of classic shots from his weekly column, "Observational Humor." Steve also includes a few bonus features, including two songs for college bands to cover and "The Math of Dating," a formulaic exploration of the college hook-up.

Winner of Columbia University's Gollin Prize for outstanding talent in journalism and media, Hofstetter has earned acclaim from prestigious names such as "The Wall Street Journal," “Sports Illustrated,” and columnist Dave Barry, who once referred to himself as "the old Steve Hofstetter."

"College isn't easy," Hofstetter said. "Laughter might be the only way to survive.”

Biography

Steve Hofstetter, author of "Student Body Shots: A Sarcastic Look at the Best 4-6 Years of Your Life," was born in New York in 1979. He grew up in Queens with his parents and three siblings.

Steve began his writing career in 1996 with an internship for hockey-writer Stan Fischler, with whom Steve wrote and did research for three books and several publications, including "Score," "Bluelines," the "Daily Freeman," the "Hockey News," and the "Fischler Report."

In 1997, Steve enrolled at Columbia University, where he eventually wrote a humor column for the "Columbia Daily Spectator," and became a radio voice for the Columbia Lions. During his freshman year, he teamed with his brother to start , a sarcastic sports site featured in over 100 different media outlets, including "Sports Illustrated," "ESPN Magazine," "Baseball Weekly," "The Wall Street Journal," and on CNN.

In 2000, Steve started writing "Observational Humor," 's most successful original section. Observational Humor began as an e-mail forward to friends, and quickly became a column read by more than 13,000 readers a week.

That same year, Steve took off from school to work as the head writer for Yankees Xtreme, the official on-line community of the New York Yankees. While there, he wrote more than 200 pieces, freelanced for , and "Yankees Magazine."

In 2001, Steve returned to Columbia and was the recipient of Columbia's Gollin Prize for "promising talent in journalism and media," which earned him an academic scholarship. He graduated from Columbia University in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in American History and a minor in Writing.

Steve spent the summer after graduation working at Sports Illustrated for Kids. Afterwards, he spent three months in Boston promoting Student Body Shots, before moving back to New York to pursue his writing career. Steve currently freelances for ESPN and Maxim magazines.
