AHS Cheerleading

AHS Cheerleading

Big Sister/Little Sister Program

What is it?

The purpose of this program is to provide support and friendship to new cheerleaders in the program, and to instill leadership skills in our older and more experienced young women. This team bonding initiative is meant to create a strong and unified program by pairing new girls with older cheerleaders. These experienced cheerleaders will always be willing to encourage, help out, and build confidence in underclassmen so that they feel more comfortable in this new (and sometimes intimidating) environment. The Big Sisters, mostly seniors, juniors, and possibly a few sophomores, will be there to guide and mentor their Little Sisters (primarily 9th and 10th graders) in what it means to be an AHS cheerleader.

How does it work?

The Big Sisters’ roles will be to support their Little Sisters in adjusting to our program and to high school in general. In return, the Little Sisters should seek to encourage and build up their Big Sisters for displaying strong leadership skills and lending a helping hand. These bonds should be mutually beneficial! ( There are several ways to build these relationships:

• Big Sisters should write encouraging letters or call their Little Sisters to make sure they feel good about their weekly experiences in our cheerleading program. In return, Little Sisters can write letters or call to voice words of appreciation to their Big Sisters. Do not be afraid to ask for help or advice. That’s what this program is all about!

• Small, and thoughtful gifts given during camp, on special game days (first and last games, Homecoming, Senior Night), before competitions, and on birthdays. These acts of kindness should NOT be overly extravagant so that they are a financial burden on anyone. The purpose of this program is not to spoil your Big/Little sister with lavish things. The purpose is to have someone in the program encouraging you, talking to you, mentoring you or looking up to you, and befriending you throughout the year. There will be a strict $10.00 limit on any gifts that are exchanged. This is a great opportunity to show your creativity and thoughtfulness. To keep it simple, yet fun, we came up with the following saying when exchanging gifts:

Make it, Bake it, Sew it, or Grow it!

Make it:

• put together a photo collage

• paint a small, personalized canvas

• create a handmade card with encouraging words

• make a CD of that person’s favorite songs

• Decorate a cup or water bottle

Bake it:

• any homemade, yummy treats tied up in cute wrapping

Sew it:

• Decorate a pillowcase for bus rides

• Make a shower wrap or flip flops

• Decorate hair ribbons, or better yet, sew a bag or pouch for all of your hair bows

Grow it:

• Flowers from your garden

Remember, these gift exchanges should be fun and thoughtful, but SHOULD NOT break the piggy bank. Use your imagination and creativity! (
