Internal Gala & Presentation Evening Report

We had lots to celebrate on our presentation evening on 3rd December 2016.

The glittering prize for the Club was winning the Borders League for the second time since the competition was introduced by the Scarborough and District Swimming Association four years ago.

The Club fought off the competition from 11 other clubs to take the title and the trophy was presented to the 2015 captains; George Sheader and Alice Clark, vice captains Elliot Moorfoot and Hollie Edeson, along with junior captains James Humble and Kezia Cartwright.

51 swimmers out of 65 members of the Club competed in the Borders League so winning the trophy really was a team effort.

All presentations on the evening were made by the outgoing Team Manager Josie Clark who, after six and a half years, decided the time was right to hand over the role to someone else.

It was announced the James Wilson will take over from Josie, working alongside Fiona Bowman, the Team Manger for friendly alas.

Josie was presented with a bouquet of flowers in the Club colours of red and white by George and Alice for her services to the Club.

She chose to award her final two Team Manager awards to Rebecca Jordin and Sophie Ostler, both 10, who after having very little gala experience, regularly did two individual 50m events in the Ridings galas, which was quite challenging following promotion to Division One at the end of last year.

A special achievement award was presented to 11 year old Connor Gardener; who earlier in the year took first place in backstroke at the Yorkshire Championships making him the number one backstroke swimmer for his age in the county, an absolutely fantastic achievement.

Megan Berry was also given a special mention for qualifying for the Yorkshire’s for the first time.

Connor was also awarded a certificate for breaking Club records and internal gala records in backstroke, butterfly and freestyle, along with the internal individual medley record.

Other internal gala records were broken by Taylor Cartwright in the girls 14/15 age group, as she set new records in both backstroke and freestyle.

Also in the 14/15 year age group, a new 50m butterfly record was set by Nathan Cuthbert.

Cups for the best newcomers were awarded to Ella Smith and Kaitlyn Scott, who are both just settling into the Club.

The trophies for the most improved swimmers went to Bradley Bateman and Sophie Ostler for lanes one and two. In lanes five and six Keira Dinsdale-Young and Molly Trueman received the trophy. In the top lanes, it was Nathan Cuthbert who the Committee thought was the deserving winner.

Regular attendance is also recognised and a trophy awarded, with the boys’ trophy going to Connor ahead of Josh Palmer and Josh Hope.

The girls’ had a joint first place, shared by Megan Berry and Kezia Cartwright, with Taylor Cartwright second and Gracie Edeson third.

The points trophy awarded by Head Coach Stewart Blackburn, for those who earned the most points for the team at galas throughout the year, went to retiring captain George Sheader and Autumn Johnson.

Autumn has had a great year with the Club and took all five gold medals for her age group at the internal Gala.

Being at the top of her age group for next year’s galas will hopefully see Autumn go from strength to strength.

Special Ambassador awards were presented to Aaron Moorfoot and Aaron Rose, who have been with the Club as swimmers for many years, both serving as captains in the past.

This year, both Aarons took on the challenge of qualifying as level one coaches and are now involved with training sessions for the younger swimmers.

The captains for next year were also announced and Elliot Moorfoot and Hollie Edeson take on the role, with Jack Cowell and Taylor Cartwright becoming vice-captains. Junior captain positions were awarded to Jack Lacey and Skye Bowman.

Will all the trophies for the swimmers presented, the Chairman of the Club, Jeremy Palmer, then presented all the coaches with gifts, along with Committee members and other poolside helpers, who all give their time voluntary to ensure Driffield has an extremely viable and successful Swimming Club.
