Inpatient Unit Guidelines:
Pikes Peak Hospice & Palliative Care has a unique, specialized inpatient hospice care unit designed for
short-term symptom management Inpatient hospice care is appropriate when a patient's symptoms require more aggressive treatment
interventions than can be provided in an outpatient setting The Pikes Peak Hospice Inpatient Unit is not a residence Most patients are cared for in this inpatient setting for less than a week General Inpatient Guidelines are defined by Medicare, regardless of insurance coverage Appropriateness for inpatient care will be evaluated daily and assistance with transfer planning
initiated within the first 3 days of admission, if indicated

General Inpatient Care is indicated when:
Intensive medical and/or nursing interventions are required to provide comfort Daily or more frequent medication adjustments are needed to manage symptoms Symptoms require complicated medical and/or nursing care that would be difficult to manage in a home
or residential facility setting Death appears imminent and rapid changes in condition require nursing assessment and support
What you can expect from us:
Daily nursing assessments Around the clock care from our team of hospice nurses, CNAs, chaplains, counselors, and volunteers Individualized management of pain and other symptoms Evaluations by our specialized Palliative Nurse Practitioners or Physicians while symptoms are being managed
Transition Planning Assistance:
Once a symptom and care management plan is established the Pikes Peak Hospice team will continue supportive care in either the home or a residential facility setting
Inpatient Team members will provide assistance regarding appropriate placement options if indicated o Training for care of the patient at home with hospice support o Counselor/Transition Navigator guidance on applying for Medicaid or other support services as needed o Assistance with long-term placement with Pikes Peak Hospice support
Admission to Inpatient Unit ? Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) Status In Place:
When a patient is considered for admission or transfer into the Pikes Peak Hospice Inpatient Unit a DNR order must be in place. This status ensures a setting conducive to a peaceful, noninvasive death.
