Observations for the Rest of Act 1 Proctor somewhat admits in a round about way that he has feelings for Abigail but is determined to be a “good man” and not associate with her again “I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of your mind. We never touched, Abby” Abigail is upset about her reputation and how Proctor’s wife is “blackening her name” in the village Coincidently Betty reacts and whines to the psalm (holy song) she hears and people use that as proof that she is possessed by a devil – Mrs. Putnam “She cannot bear to hear the Lord’s name!” Rebecca Nurse (wife of Francis Nurse) seems to be a respected kind woman (treats Betty softly) and she seems to believe that Betty is simply just sick and it will pass… tries to convince the others of this as well—could be foreshadowing that things will not improve if people continue to speak of witchcraft Rebecca: “I think you’d best send Reverend Hale back as soon as he come. This will set us all to arguin’ again in the society, and we thought to have peace this year. I think we ought to rely on the doctor now, and good prayer” “Let us rather blame ourselves”… Proctor admits he does not bother with going to church anymore and they turn on each other: “hear him preach only hellfire and damnation. Take it to heart, Mr. Parris. There are many others who stay away from church these days because you hardly ever mention God anymore” Proctor accuses Parris of being concerned more with his salary and the ownership of his house than his holy duties to the community Parris is upset and tells everyone a minister is NOT meant to be crossed or contradicted and admits that he knows people are against him and trying to get him out of power “There is a party in this church. I am not blind; there is a faction and a party” More foreshadowing – Giles “Wherefore is everybody suing everybody else? Think on it now, it’s a deep thing, and dark as a pit. I have been six time in court this year” Rebecca is shocked to hear Mrs. Putnam asked her daughter to go to Tituba and “conjure up the dead” --- IRONY Mrs. Putnam “Let God blame me, not you, not you, Rebecca!”Giles is concerned about the types of books his wife is reading and asks Reverend Hale about it and what it could mean that he was unable to say his prayers Parris asks why the Devil would choose to strike his house and Reverend Hale says:“What victory would the Devil have to win a soul already bad? It is the best the Devil wants, and who is better than the minister?” Scapegoating of Tituba “I never sold myself! I’m a good girl! I’m a proper girl!... She made me do it! She made Betty do it!” and Putnam says Tituba should be hanged Then Tituba says that she saw someone else involved and that the devil spoke to her and told her to kill Parris … finally says she saw Goody Osburn (she was midwife to Mrs. Putnam) Tituba finally calling out a name sends the other girls into calling out other names who were apparently “involved” ................
