NEWS & VIEWS

Editor's Note

TV Reflections

After working in this industry for over 20 years now, I'm constantly amazed by the fact that there is never a month where we don't have some riveting new programming options to share with you. One of the shows leading our "What's New" section this month is a timely and personal story based

on Martha Raddatz's New York Times bestseller The Long Road Home. This moving, eight-part miniseries comes during the month in which we honor our country's veterans and shares the stories of soldiers and their families. The series focuses on the Iraq War battle known as "Black Sunday," where the 1st Cavalry Division was ambushed just days into their yearlong deployment. Our senior writer Lori Acken went to Fort Hood earlier this year, where at the time National Geographic was operating the largest set in North America. Her story of watching the actual veterans and the actors portraying them is eloquently shared inside. This issue also includes expanded PBS coverage and a true crime section that features TV films and specials on Elizabeth Smart, Oscar Pistorius, Kathleen Durst and the Clutter family murders. Plus, we talk to former Criminal Minds star Shemar Moore about S.W.A.T. and take a look at some of our new favorites, Young Sheldon and Damnation. Blessings to you and your family this Thanksgiving.

Movies That Still Scare Me!

These movies still scare me: 1. The China Syndrome, 2. Broken Mirrors, 3. Nosferatu the Vampyre (the one with Klaus Kinski). -- Pat

Even though it's a PG-13 movie, I am obsessively scared by Insidious. Lipstick-Face Demon creeps me out, and I can't even look at Darth Maul from Star Wars anymore because of the resemblance. -- Bernadette

Howard. Has she done or been in anything else? Monk is the only program I've seen her in. -- Bruce

Though she had big roles in "Two Guys and a Girl" and "Boston Common" in the late '90s, Traylor Howard pretty much fell off the earth after "Monk."

QUESTION OF THE MONTH:

If you could program a network for a day, what would you air?

Email us at letters@

OMG it would have to be The Exorcist. If I see that it's coming on, I avoid that channel at all costs. I don't want to see it, hear it or even think about it, and I'm 49. -- Lisa

I think I might nominate the Phantasm series. Creepy visuals, creepy tall guy, murderous flying balls. What's not frightening about all that? -- Wendy

Thanks for writing us -- we are sending everyone who wrote in this month a free copy of "ReMIND" magazine.

About Monk's Assistant ... Short note on two things. First, so glad to see and read Emily Kinney (Beth from The Walking Dead) will be on ABC's Ten Days in the Valley. Secondly, we just picked up Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, and I'm enjoying the hell out of watching my favorite programs Columbo and Monk. My question is this: Monk's assistant, his second one (Natalie Teeger), was played by Traylor

More Classic Favorites

My favorite all-time classic movie is The Day the Earth Stood Still, the 1951 version. It makes you stop and think, what could man accomplish if we spent less time fighting each other and worked together? I really enjoy my magazine but am disappointed with listings at the end of the month with missing programming. Have you ever thought about publishing twice a month? -- Clark

Some networks don't include as robust of a schedule the last week of the month. That's why you see some holes. Costs unfortunately prohibit us from publishing twice a month.

Pierce & Shakespeare

I would like to see Pierce Brosnan on the cover of the magazine at least once every year. He was a dashing James Bond, 007, and is a great father -- though unscrupulous and ruthless at times -- in the AMC series The Son. I read that he will be acting and singing again in the Mamma Mia! movie sequel. Pierce is like good wine -- he gets better with age! Also, I really enjoyed Will, the series about William Shakespeare on TNT. What happened to it? -- Jean

Agree with you on Pierce -- he definitely gets more handsome with age. Unfortunately, "Will" was officially canceled.

Mad About "Outsiders"

Under your Yanked column, I saw the TV series Outsiders on WGN America was canceled. Why? Why? Why? I thought that this show was one of WGN's top shows? I was there every week. Any chance of it coming back? Or another network picking it up? -- Ronald

Based on executive producer Peter Tolan's Twitter comments, the producers were originally looking for a new home for the show, as the cancellation had nothing to do with ratings and was all about business and timing. Unfortunately, they couldn't find a new network, and the actors' contracts expired. He finished off saying, "God bless you all for caring so much. Really. It makes the work so worthwhile."

Include your address when you write or email us and we'll most likely send you something. We're not promising, we're just saying. Also, if you didn't know this, the letters and opinions above reflect the views of our readers, so don't go crazy on us because you don't like what someone else said.
